The Church of San Francisco de Padua is an architectural gem that houses a valuable collection of archabusier angels, colonial paintings of great beauty. The anecdote is that they asked the Indians to paint angels, but they did not know the Christian tradition, so they painted the winged "conquerors", the Spanish Lords. They don't allow you to take pictures inside.

It dates back to the 17th century. It is American style, 1 m thick adobe walls. The tower is separate from the main building. The altar is hand carved in wood and gold leaves.
The most striking thing inside are the paintings of the harquebusier angels made by painters from Cusco in the colonial era.
12 had been donated to the church but years later there were only 9, which are the ones on display.
It was declared a National Historical Monument on July 14, 1941. Built in honor of the Holy Cross and dedicated to San Francisco de Paula, it was a parish aid of Humahuaca. It was completed in 1691.
You cannot take photos inside. Free access.

This beautiful church in Uquia is one of the many colonial churches in Jujuy. It has a fine collection of paintings from the Cusco School of Art . (the Incas were taught to paint for the Spanish and put their own symbols in the paintings)
There are nine angel paintings. When the Indians were told to paint angels, they did not know what they looked like. The Spanish told them that they look like us, but with wings. They painted soldiers with swords, spears and wings. The most beautiful wings that the Indians knew were the ones from the flamingos of the highland lakes and so the wings in the paintings on the soldiers are pink. The angels have very red cheeks from the wind in the northern Andes against the Spanish fair skin. (no photographs please)

We stopped by this small church in this small village on our way back to Tilcara one afternoon and I am so glad we did.
This church possesses the most unique paintings of angels I have ever seen. They are called Angels Arcabuseros. Only four original paintings remain and one is being restored. The story is that artisans studying under Spanish artists painted what they knew. So the angels wings were modeled from flamingo wings and the angels were Spanish soldiers. The difficult details of the paintings were done by the Spanish experts. These paintings are from 1691 and should be in a museum where the environment is better to protect them. There is an amazing altar made from 17 kilos of gold leaf. The ceiling is made from cactus wood. You cannot take photos inside the church.
A very surprising and worthwhile stop!

The Iglesia San Francisco is a must see if you are travelling to Humahuaca (another must see). The church looks like something from a Leone Western and the paintings inside are quite wonderful - 9 angels dressed as 17th century Spanish soldiers in the most elaborate costumes, all with wings and weapons. Fabulous!

The humble exterior of this little white painted church, established in 1691, gives no clue to its imposing interior. The ornate altar, resplendent in gold leaf, is completed by the paintings of soldier angels.
Check for access, as some renovation work is going on.

There is no information provided at the church as to what you are seeing. But it's worth checking out "Aracabucero" on the internet to learn about these paintings and how they are historically significant. If you have that information, then this church is very much worth seeing.

The Church of San Francisco de Paula has to be visited. Stop at Uquia an enter into this little jewel (it's very easy to find and you don't lose a lot of time doing it). ithe most beautiful thing are the painting inside: the 8 angels soldiers, even if now are only 4 to be viewed because the other are in restaurating. Magnificent costumes, wings and weapons. Fantastic!

We went there and did get it, we walked in and didn’t se much, nor found any information about the church. Would skip it, but the market outside is nice.

Quiet village church with fascinating insight into early colonial times.
The paintings of angels, guns and flamingo wings are the obvious highlight. However the small token cabinet full of tiny silver offerings is very poignant.
The solid silver key to the church is worth holding in your hand if the caretaker will allow - just ponder on who else has held it over the last few hundred years!

Saludo grande!
