Seeking out Sherlock's creator
Sep 2020
I'm going to be honest, the only reason we visited was to see Arthur Conan-Doyle's resting place (thanks to D making me watch the short film at the New Forest information centre in Lyndhurst - I didn't know we were so close, staying in Lymington!). I LOVE Sherlock Holmes. So the five stars are purely for the AC-D aspect! As an atheist and agnostic, I can only really reflect on our reason for visiting, so...Minstead was a lovely little village and the church was a sweet little building. Arthur's tombstone is at the back under a large tree and on our visit the historic pipe was in place! This was a special moment for me (I have a Holmes script with the BBC, so standing in front of his resting place certainly raised the hairs on my arms). If you're a lover Sherlock and are in the New Forest, I'd say it's worth a visit of course!

Lovely little church, obviously cared for by the community. Very strange building part of which is Norman. If you are in the village worth a look, but don't go out of your way to see it

My 2nd visit this year , a truly beautiful little church with a wonderful history . I'm an atheist but understand how important churches were in the past . We went looking for ancestors in the churchyard (My 3 x Great grandmother was baptised here) another draw is sir Arthur Conan Doyle's grave . A beautifully cared for exquisite church. The pub next door the trusty servant is worth a visit too .

Pure charm
May 2018 • Couples
If ever a church reflected the affection and care of its parishoners then All Saints is a highly polished mirror. Step inside and you are back in a bygone age, when people mattered to each other, and the community was just that. The kneelers with their vast range of tapestry designs are quite wonderful. The proclaimed vow to carry out 1000 acts of kindness, of benefit to others, should be broadcast further afield. The churchyard signals that many good families and have been born, lived and died in Minstead, in days when travel outside the parish was uncommon. Our visit was to trace our ancestry, our joy was that they all came from such a delightful village, tempered with the knowledge that for a working-class family the living was hard, the income small, but the families large.

Unique design, curiously charming.

This is an extraordinary church with a longer apse than nave and an exterior that looks more domestic, but containing 13th century features. Conan Doyle is buried in the churchyard. The congregation was charming if slightly eccentric.

This is a lovely well kept church in the very pretty village of Minstead in the New Forest. It really is a interesting and to round it off a famous person is laid to rest in the churchyard, Sir Conan Doyle. Well worth a visit.

A lovely grave for Conan Doyle at the back of the churchyard
Aug 2016 • Solo
I drove to Minstead, a tiny village off the freeway that was very pretty and contained a church with Arthur Conan Doyle buried towards the rear of their little cemetery under the large oak tree. He was reinterred from Crowborough where he died after his home was sold. The words on his gravestone say: Steel True, Blade Straight, Arthur Conan Doyle, Knight, Patriot, Physician, and Man of Letters, 1859 to 1930. There was some controversy over his being buried in a churchyard due to his belief in the spiritual world, common in the 1920s. So they put him at the back under the tree which was promptly struck by lightning soon after. The pipe is loose on the gravestone and is never removed – only in this quiet part of England could this occur. It is a lovely little churchyard and the tree still bears the scars of the lightning.

Went to see Conan Doyle's grave but found the church fascinating. With an original centre part this church has been added to over the centuries.
