Expensive transportation, but beats the alternative

We landed at the International Airport and needed to get to San Ignacio. It is a long ride, so I had contacted several shuttle services beforehand, hoping to have a car waiting for us. Well, it didn't work that way. Nobody responded in a timely manner, so by the time we got to the airport nobody had confirmed. I thought, "Oh, well, we will get a cab or something." We were directed to go outside and talk to the person who was dispatching the taxies. He said the ride will cost $150 US dollars. That is 300 Belizian Dollars. The only other option was to get a cab to Belize city for $25US or $50 Belizian dollars and get on a chicken bus to San Ignacio. Sweating in the merciless heat that engulfed us unprepared, and after a long, overnight flight, we didn't fancy that option. Somehow we thought we could negotiate with the local cabbies, but no, they would not budge. So, in the end, we did fork over the $150 and got in a car that was clean but a bit old. The driver was nice and talkative, he made the time go fast and we were in San Ignacio before sunset. So, my advise is to start arranging for shuttles at least a week before your departure. Some shuttles will charge less than $150, but would not go below $100. Just keep that in mind to save yourself some time.
