A handsome looking catholic church but one that does not stand out in any way from the myriad of other churches reviewed on this site. Single nave, barrel vault structure is whitewashed both inside and out with the exception of the facade which is stone and fairly straightforward. The interior is very simple and fairly small. the church is a must-see in Campeche, but in any European city, this church would be a tertiary option for a traveler.

Campeche Cathedral dominates the main square. Built over the course of two centuries and finished in the mid-nineteenth century, it has something colonial and something neoclassical. The interior is not particularly sumptuous. It is best enjoyed in the evening when it is illuminated.

We like to visit during the day to see the interior (make sure it is open) and then return for the lights. Neither time were we disappointed. It has the typical and attractive Spanish interior decor with a niche cemetery out one door. We skipped the pay for entry museum in the courtyard as it looked like one room with just some religious articles not to our taste. Mass was just finishing when we arrived and it was sparsely attended.

Small one nave cathedral pretty much all in white. More interesting is adjacent museum with some of the interesting things, including a monument called "The Holy Burial" that represents a coffin with the figure of Christ and that during Good Friday is carried by the main streets of the city. It was built between 1540 and 1760. Museum also has a lovely courtyard.

The gem of the city
Is quiet and beautiful
Mass is everyday and usually on early morning or evening
The construction is from stone and ancient paintings
Catholic people will love this place

It’s a cute cathedral but definitely better to view in the evening especially when the street is busy with people after 10pm....

The cathedral and square surrounding it are treated like affectionate friends by the locals, or so it seems. The cathedral was being cleaned lovingly and reverently by a couple when we looked in.

All the locals congregate in the square. Nestled in the heart of the walled city it comes alive at night with children flying kites, locals selling their wares and a stunning lightshow. The Cathedral itself is beautiful inside and out. A must see.

Beautiful old church. You can walk in and look around. Exterior is excellent for pictures. Right across from the main square and the trolley tours.

Very simple inside but fascinating, especially when the sun goes down. Cute little hidden garden inside. Worth a visit!
