About
Jean-Paul Schmitt is producing biodynamic wines at Scherwiller in the Alsatian region called Bas-Rhin. He farms the family owned wine estate consisting of eight hectares, all in one piece, on the hillside called Rittersberg: " the mountain of the knights". The vineyard is exposed to south – southeast and benefits of a microclimate that is exceptionally hot and dry. Its geological structure consists mainly of granite sand with different thickness (many large rocks show on the surface) mixed with granite pebbles (up to 65% in some sections). This ground is relatively poor and demanding but yet fertile – the vine plants are forced to get the power to grow from a well developed and deep growing root system. The work of Jean-Paul Schmitt is based on understanding and respect for this exceptional environment. He is forcing himself to control the productivity (38 hl/ha in average), a policy of a reasonable fight against illness in the vineyard as well as a biological battle against the worms in the grapes. Since 2009 the production is entirely organic, certified by Ecocert France. From vintage 2015 on, the estate is officially certified by Demeter for biodynamic production.

We had a very nice time at the estate with a lovely tasting of several of their wines. The presenter spook english fluently and gave us a deeper understanding of the winery, the making of wine and the maintenance of their vinyards. With passion he reacted to all of our questions. For people who are interested in quality wine this is a must see in the area!
