Located in the heart of Iringa in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania, Iringa Boma is a place for education, participation and recreation. Boma is a Swahili word for fortification, perfectly describing the Centre as a stronghold of culture and heritage in the Region. It offers various opportunities to engage with culture and heritage in Iringa, for people from within and from outside the region. The Boma in one of the oldest remaining buildings in Iringa, constructed around 1900 by the German colonial regime to serve as a military hospital. From Tanzania’s independence in 1961 until 2014 it was in use as Regional and District administration office offering civil services. Beginning in 2014, the building was completely renovated and restored to its original design. It re-opened in 2016 as a regional museum and cultural centre. The museum is a very interesting look into the history of Iringa and the region, with some quaint stories that really brings the city into perspective. The coffee shop, run by a couple from Berlin, brings the best of German and Tanzanian cafe culture and fresh food together.

It doesn’t take long to get around this museum and frankly, there are not too many artifacts presented. Quite a few pictures and art work. There are 5 rooms. The place was neat and well kept and not that expensive. Make sure you go upstairs to see the baskets on display - very well made. Worth a visit if you want to read more about the history of Iringa.

This is a little gem has five rooms with well captioned displays on the region. It is well maintained in a beautiful historic building that was restored in 2016. The staff is friendly and helpful. In the same building is a terrific cafe and one of the best gift shops in town.

It's a small local museum (just over a half an hour was enough for us to see and read everything) yet information about the Iringa region were nicely displayed and quite interesting. Definitely worth a short visit.

Coffee shop has assorted items to be microwaved, outdoor patio a pleasant location across from the park. The museum itself is limited, the displays well lighted and descriptive.

The new museum offers both travelers and residents a look at the history and local culture of Iringa town & region. The sign boards are informative and overall the layout of the museum is attractive.
If you want a better understanding of the historical events which formed today's Iringa, then this is definitely a stop to add to your agenda when passing through.
