The Basilica of Sant'Apollinare in Classe rises in all its solemn grandeur at a distance of 8 kilometres from the centre of Ravenna. Commissioned by archbishop Ursicino, the church was built by Julian Argentarius during the first half of the 6th century, on an ancient burial area used in the late 2nd or early 3rd century. Apparently, Saint Apollinaris -... More

Also on the Unesco list but not included on the combo ticket which allows you to visit 5 places for 9.50. This one is 6.50 (expensive) I would go for the 5 places in Ravenna, not worth to drive the extra 7 kms.

The Basilica of Sant' Apollinare in Classe is an important monument of Byzantine art near Ravenna, Italy. When the UNESCO inscribed eight Ravenna sites on the World Heritage List, it cited this basilica as "an outstanding example of the early Christian basilica in its purity and simplicity of its design and use of space and in the sumptuous nature of... Sant’Apollinare In Classe is the “complement” of Sant’Apollinare Nuovo: in Sant’Apollinare Nuovo the mosaics of the apse are lost – destroyed by the Byzantines because they were too Arianism-oriented or celebrated the Ostrogoth King Theodoric the Great – but the mosaics of the lateral walls are preserved. In Sant’Apollinare In Classe the original byzantine mosaics are preserved only in the... More

Ravenna has 8 must-see, UNESCO World History sites. All are worthy of the designation, and yet THIS is the one NOT to miss! Be patient trying to find the entrance (you have to walk counter-clockwise around the nearby hotel and open market) but what a joy awaits you!!

The mosaics in this 6th century basilica are quite beautiful. Also of note are the numerous sarcophagi lining the walls.

As beautiful as I had imagined, the light, colour and simplicity. The location and atmosphere of this Basilica, a short bus ride from Ravenna, is a joy to visit.

It is a unique monument in the world. If you love late antiquity and early byzantine art this place will amaze you, especially the mosaics but the architecture is striking too. There is a ticket to pay but you can enter for free on the first Sunday of every month.

This is the most incredible place set in the middle of roads. When you go in from the heat you enter a huge, plain church (the Venetians took away the wall decorations) and will see the most amazing mosaic of sheep on briliantly green pasture. It takes your breath away. It is true that the other mosaics in Ravenna are... More

The Basilica of Sant'Apollinare in Classe (Classe is a fraction of Ravenna, now about three miles from the present city) owes its survival from Allied shelling to the intervention of ''Popski'' (Vladimir Peniakoff), the celebrated World War II commander. Sant'Apollinare in Classe has an apse of breathtaking loveliness. The mosaic picture on the arched ceiling portrays a glorious jewel-encrusted cross... More
