- GS268Houston, Texas81 contributionsNice little castle, worth the visit if you have the timeNice little castle in a small peaceful town. You will need about a couple of hours if you want to relax and walk around. Best way to reach is to take the sprinter from Amsterdam to Weesp and bus 110 to Muiderslot. 10 minutes walk from the bus stop. Recommend highly for family with kids.Visited December 2022Written January 1, 2023
- tmsc146 contributionsGreat timeVery easy to get to using train and bus. I went early at 11 am. Had the place to myself of course it’s February not exactly prime tourist season. There is a snack shop there or bring your own. There are a few tables to eat at overlooking the castle. Was just a wonderful experience eating and relaxing looking at the castle and watching the geese fly over. And the staff are very friendly and helpful. Very nice people.Visited February 2023Traveled soloWritten February 9, 2023
- Peggy MLake Placid, New York25 contributionsInteresting castleGreat historic castle with beautiful gardens. Very interesting self guided tour in many languages so you can see the castle at your own speed. It was very cold the day we visited. One half of the castle has period furniture. You get to go up steep winding stairs to the turrets which is really cool!Visited February 2023Traveled with friendsWritten February 11, 2023
- Mark TReykjavik, Iceland5 contributionsMedieval timesThis was an out of the way place to get to but relatively easy via train, bus and walking. The day we visited was very quite. Castle with moat was very impressive. Absolute gem. The village of Muirden was fantastic and very picturesque with canal and locks. The sailing boat views and lots of yachts around. 13th century castle is preserved very well and the rooms are decorated so we can visualize the purpose of rooms and chambers.Visited April 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten April 29, 2023
- rmnorton21 contributionExcellent castle to visit in NLThis is an excellent castle to visit if you could only see one. It is picturesque, well maintained, it has an interesting history and was a "working" castle built for defense and protection. Numerous rooms are furnished and the audio guides provide a great narrative.Visited June 2023Traveled with familyWritten June 2, 2023
- JklUnited States59 contributionsGreat castleFantastic historical castle, you actually get to walk up ancient stair cases into the towers. Very convenient to Amsterdam and the little town of Muiden is quite charming as well. You can get here by bus and train but I don't recommend it due to the bus schedule. I would suggest getting a taxi or uber or driving here.Visited June 2023Written July 1, 2023
- dedicatedtraveller6,073 contributionsWONDERFUL castle to visit... HIGHLY recommend going!Just a delightful place to visit! We were on a 'spur of the moment' tour to the castle and were SO glad we did do it. Muiden is a delightful little place in its own right. Had coffee and apple cake there after our castle visit as such a short walk from castle. Setting is picture postcard for the castle. On a stonking sunny day it looked idylic! Plenty to see in the rooms but not so big you get overwhelmed. SO sad the painting of the twins in the bedroom with one looking sickly... sadly she died.... Good views of the gardens and surrounding area from the battlements. Stairs up the tower were SO worn.... gave a real feel of age to the castle! The gardens were lovely to walk around too. HIGHLY recommend visiting this little gem of a place, guarentee you wont be disappinted!Visited July 2023Written July 10, 2023
- SOPHIEEngland, United Kingdom34 contributionsOne of the oldest and pre-served castles in NL!This castle is the real deal, feels very medieval. Audio guides are available inside the castle gates which adds to the experience and provides a greater sense of the people who occupied the castle and each of the individual rooms. Slightly challenging to get to from Amsterdam (had to take a train to weesp, then the 110 bus to Muiden centrum before walking the rest - approx. 45 minutes in total, not counting the waiting time between the train and the bus). However, definitely worth a visit!Visited June 2023Written August 6, 2023
- Nadina PNew York City, New York338 contributionsCountryside castle in striking distanceWe took an Uber to this caste; it's accessible by public transportation, but it was only 20 mins from our hotel via car, so it was totally worth it for us. It was far more off the beaten track than I expected; Muiden is the only place I went to in the Netherlands where they were surprised to encounter English speakers, though everyone spoke it. The castle grounds are gorgeous; we went at the very end of September, and the gardens were still blooming. The inside of the castle was cool as well, and the audioguide was great. Unlike many castles/mansions I've toured, the vast majority of the space is open to tourists. There were great views of the town nearby, Fort Pampus, and even Amsterdam in the distance. There were great art displays, and some of the weaponry was even interactive. While it seems like foreigners don't really know about this spot, it seems like Dutch tourists did; we were among the firsts to enter, and by the time we left there were some sizeable groups coming in. I'm very glad I made the trip for this!Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 14, 2023

The journey there and the surrounding landscape was very lovely. The castle itself is quite nice as well, with interesting audio commentary and pretty views. Be sure to check out Weesp if you are taking a bus from there to Muiden. We also recommend Cafe Graaf Floris in Muiden, their food is very nice.

One of the oldest castle in Netherlands, situated at 15 KM distance from Netherlands 🇳🇱. The inside of the castle, its rooms and kitchens, was restored to look like they did in the 17th century and several of the rooms now house a collection of arms. You can find restaurants and nice places to have coffee, visiting the castle can be an excellent day bike trip. Entrance is 16.50 EUR or free if you have a museum card.

We visiting the castle on a Sunday in August and expected it to be busy but it was just right, not too busy, not too quiet.
We parked up our bikes outside after cycling from near Amsterdam (Flevopark) it took us around 45 mins with the kids on little bikes.
The castle has two audio guides, one for a tower tour and one for learning about how people lived inside the castle. A nice balance of facts and quirky anecdotes. Even our six year old enjoyed the audio guide.
There were extra art activities in the gardens, one which was painting and the other creating a castle with stamps which the kids loved.
Would recommend a nice bike ride and day out.

It was surprising to see the castle well preserved. In some of the halls, the royal dishes were kept in display. The castle was surrounded by moats, garden and a plum orchard. The views from the watch tower were simply magnificent! There was a souvenir shop and a small cafe to take home some memorabilia.

The castle is located abou 15 kilometres sothwest from Amsterdam in the village Muiden. There are beautiful gardens around, ideal place to relax. The castle is wonderful place for children (families or school trips) to enjoy options of the castle. For example they can borrow costumes and make some photos. The village Muiden is good place to have a cup of coffee or lunch.

One of the coolest medieval castles we've visited (smaller than the one in Prague, but still very much worth a visit). The audio tour is excellent. Just focus your personal unit on the code on the sign in each room, and listen to the presentation. Very well done. Interesting information about the toilets in the castle, as well as the dungeon room. The furnishings and art work are incredibly interesting. A real gem.

Highly recommend a trip to Muiderslot Castle. Not only is the castle from 1295 intriguing with an excellent audio tour, the trip there and the beautiful castle area with wonderful outdoor seating bistros overlooking the water is just magical. From Amsterdam, the bike ride is manageable if relatively fit. On standard rental bikes, it took us a bit longer than the estimated time on Google Maps, however the majority of the ride was nice paths with water on one or both sides, through picturesque fields, and sometimes biking around sheep taking their leisure.

You do not have to take the guided tour. Although it is a lot nicer and you will get a better understanding of how the people lived. I have never heard people taking the ferry. You can reach t Muiderslot by bus from Amsterdam and it is possible to bike also from the Central station area. Or rent a scooter.Pubic transportation : you can take the train to Weesp, then rent a bike or take the bus. you can google it.There is also a very nice fortress town called Naarden about 15 minutes by bike from Muiden. The town has a very interesting history . Enjoy your time!!!
