Only eight Cistercian monks live here but a lovely, multi- lingual local proved a superb guide. The monastery may be humble from the outside but is exquisite on the inside, especially the libraries with both ornate gold and "red" copper leaf figurals. Parking lot is below; walk uphill to access the grounds. Toilets at both the monastary and parking lot.

This was an interesting stop. We were on an Overseas Adventure Travel itinerary, and we stopped to have a tour of the abbey as well as get some history from a caretaker. This monastery is still a working monastery; they have 9 monks in residence. They are slowly renovating the buildings. We visited the church first which was gorgeous. No photos were allowed inside either the church or the monastery. We were also shown an incredible ancient library where there were thousands of books. There was also a museum with pieces from the middle ages. Well worth the visit.

We first stopped at the cathedral of this medieval monastery and viewed the beautiful altar. One of the monks let us in to the main part.

We then were taken to the massive historical library. It houses thousands of very old books and manuscripts from ancient times to more recent. These were spared by the communists and Nazis since this monastery was used as a warehouse for other art and valuables during occupation. They were fortunate that all these very valuable books were not destroyed during the communist era.

Vyssi Brod mainly offers white water sports and walks, with the Abbey the main cultural attraction. Unfortunately we arrived at 11.45, just before lunch closing, and with no tours before 1 pm. Unfortunately we were told no tours were available in English so we just walked around the public spaces, which did allow the opportunity to peer into the splendid church. Quite a lot of the site is in disrepair, although it is obvious they are renovating elements. Behind the Abbey is a nice and easy 90 minute circular walk through the woods to a small waterfall.
Parking for 30 Kc/h directly opposite the Abbey.
The town itself is unremarkable.

We stopped here on a tour of the region, and I was somewhat dreading it. Boy, was I wrong. It is fascinating and well preserved. You need to pay a n entrance fee to receive a guided tour of the interior. The main altar alone is incredible in detail. You keep asking yourself, How did they do this? Also the libraries inside are REALLY interesting. Do not miss this monastery.

The Cistercian Monastery in Vyssi Brod is near the surging tourist town of Cesky Krumlov. The monastery dates to mid-13th century and is considered the spiritual center of South Bohemia. As a writer, I found the Baroque-era library with leather-bound books (some were bound manuscripts, meaning handwritten). Encompassed in several buildings there is also a museum and art gallery. Touring the buildings brings to mind that you enter the world of the Dark Ages. I was on an organized tour and the Czech guide translated what the monastery staffer revealed, though it’s possible to have a self-guided tour. This attraction is not wheelchair accessible, and there are stairs. It may not be an attraction worth a special trip, but if you’re passing through the village, I highly recommend exploring items of unfathomable age. Gratefully, this area was not destroyed in World War II.

Great old monastery with extensive history. Well worth a visit if you are in the area. All of the component parts are worth seeing especially the church.

This Cistercian abbey is the only fully-functional such abbey in the Czech Republic and, as such, is deserving of a serious visit.

The only way to see and appreciate the totality of the artwork, library, cloister and other gems is to purchase a ticket for a guided tour. These tickets are at a nominal price - approximately CZK100 or €4 each.

There is also a nice cafe on site, serving homemade treats and delights!
