About
The "Cachoeira Grande Farm is a large rural property on the outskirts of the city called "Vassouras" - Rio de Janeiro State - and has great importance for the history of its founder The Baron of "Vassouras" who was one of the most important figures of the century. XIX of the entire region. In the late nineties, after three decades of neglect and almost ruin the property was acquired by Francesco V. Caffarelli industrial and art collector who spared no effort to bring it back to full splendor. Today still has many historical improvements where stands the big house with over 1,200 square meters and where about 18 years from now the farm receives tourists from around the world for a true return to the past in a house alive (people live there) and not as a museum. The tour starts in the gardens of the farm, near the lake and walk traverses a beautiful avenue of royal palms, passing alongside the ancient terraces used for dryed the coffee. Then going into the big house by the front door. Inside the house, it's told facts and objects. Paintings, porcelains, tapestries, furniture, chandeliers, pianos and many many other historical riches collected after many years of research and query between art auctions, antique shops, houses to be demolished, etc. At the end of the seven main halls, it's served a delicious freshly brewed coffee from natural grain, accompanied by warm cheese breads, juices, water and possibly other delicacies to match. Is expected soon to be install a local shop items and souvenirs, as well as opening other cultural spaces like Gallery Magdalena Vieira Manso, spaces for itinerant exhibitions, etc.

Visited here with my partner and mother-in-law on a Saturday afternoon. The fazenda is an easy short drive from Vassouras, I think only about 5km. You need to phone in advance to reserve a tour, our was marked for 3pm on the Saturday afternoon. R$75 per person to visit. It might sound more expensive than standard in Brazil, but it seems to be the norm for the coffee fazendas, and the experience showed that it was absolutely worth the money.
From outside the house is stunning, with a remarkable setting in the Brazilian countryside, seemingly in the middle of nowhere, quite stunning.
Our visit lasted a couple of hours, and our hosts, the owners of the fazenda, were incredibly enthusiastic, knowledgeable and welcoming. There was one other family on our tour, so only 7 people in total.
I won't give the full story of the fazenda here, but both owners have been intimately involved in the full restoration of the fazenda which had been left abandoned. It is truly beautiful inside, the furnishings are remarkable and so well chosen. Nothing original from the house remains, (apart from some fittings in the kitchen) but nonetheless there were many stories to be told about the huge endeavour to restore and furnish the place with beautiful and unique objects. Anyone with an interest in colonial/imperial period will love the visit. It is finished off with a truly lovely and convivial 'high tea' of cakes, juice, coffee, pao de queijo. And conversation with the two hosts.
I don't know if they do the tour in English, maybe not, but I'd still recommend to non-Portuguese speakers, it is such a loverly house, such a unique experience in Brazil, and such friendly hosts.

Your own chalet by the lake in historic fazenda
Dec 2017 • Family
One of the nicest Fazendas in the Vale do Café also has a charming bungalow that sleeps 4 people, by the lake. Ideal for families or group of friends. Very courteous and informative tour of the fazenda conducted by the owners, who live in the property.

Visit to Vassouras and Cachoeira Grande
Aug 2016 • Friends
We were a group of three and had an excellent tour at Cachoeira Grande near to Vassouras in Brazil. The buildings especially the main house have been very well restored and a lot of money spent. Our host for the tour was George who was very friendly and knowledgable and can speak English. He gave a very interesting explanation of the history of the coffee farm as he showed us through the grounds and main house, particularly the dependence for commercial success on slavery. He even showed us some coffee plants with flowers and fruit. Vassouras is quite a nice town and the Fazenda Cachoeira Grande is well worth a visit.

Omg, this place is Amazing! Only 30 or so minutes from the city but it feels so far away from anything. It's like a little piece of paradise.
The visit is scheduled in advance cause you get a guided visit. Me and my husband arrived almost an hour at least early cause we didn't expect it to be that easy to find.
The owner of the house came to greet us and gave us permission to walk around the outside property already. The weather was great so it made for great photos.
When our group was complete we started the tour. Nothing but amazing. The guide is closely involved and enthusiastic.
The house is nothing but amazing! And the owners actually live there. So basically you get a tour in someone's home! They are very kind! The tour ended in the living room and they had coffee, juice and sweets prepared for us.
It was all so informal. One of the best tours I've ever attended.
And I totally want to live here!
