- TommoMelbourne, Australia56,001 contributionsFavourite island off VeniceWe visited Burano, Murano and Torcello and this was our favourite island by far. I actually wish we spent more time on this island. Burano is a 45-minute trip from St. Mark's Square by vaporetto. It can also be reached from F Nova which is quicker. Burano is famous for the colorful houses the leaning bell tower, the elderly ladies with their lace making. B Its such a pretty island the the main square Piazza Baldassare Galuppi has lots of shops bars and restaurants. This is a UNESCO listed site.Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten January 12, 2024

Such an oasis of colour & calm just a short ferry crossing from Venice Island. We wondered around & could have wondered for many hours more at the colourful & pretty houses. So different from Venice & 100% recommend.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 14, 2024
- AnuradhaNew Delhi, India1,258 contributionsOutstandingA very beautiful island with colourful houses, easily approachable from Venice via regular vaporetto service. These depart from the stop at Fondamente Nove on the north side of the city. Fishermen of the village made colourful houses owing to foggy weather. There are many lace shops which sell beautiful products. A must visit if you are in Venice for 2-3 days.Visited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten June 24, 2024
- springbankGreve, Denmark3,901 contributionsAbsolutely worth visiting64 kilometers from the larger city of Venice lies the island of Burano, which consists of four small islands connected by canals and bridges and covers an area of only 20 hectares. The small size makes it really easy to explore the streets, It is absolutely worth walking through the narrow streets of the city to admire the colorful houses, which stand out against the blue sky in a range of pastels and bright colors. Burano and its colorful houses are a tourist attraction on the island along with the lace crafts, but the story behind it is more interesting than you might think, because the locals say that the facades of the houses were painted in different colors to guide the fishermen who worked from sunrise to sunset in the most fearful climate, through the fog. When you return home, the colored facades make it easier to find your way back.Visited July 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 11, 2024

Burano is like the baby sister of Murano, with plenty of opportunity to buy the fantastic murano glass, but Burano, is actually more famous for it's lace making and products. There are women dotted around the shops demonstrating their lace making skills, and plenty of small lace items to buy a piece of this artwork. The buildings and architecture on this island are really colourful (purportedly the fishermen painted their houses bright colours to find their way home in the frequent fogs that cover the Islands). The maze of brightly painted homes are a delight to wander around and between the shop lined streets are plenty of restaurants, bars and bistros to enjoy a break and refreshments. I recommend the ice-cream parlours!! Can't leave Italy without trying the ice-cream.
The frequency of the water buses between Burano, Murano and the main islands of Venice is good, right into the early hours of the morning, and very reasonably priced to make a complete day of island hopping cheaply and easily.

Venice is nice, but there's so much hustle-bustle, and it is so overrun with tourists everywhere. Burano is not a hidden secret, but it is still quieter and delightful. Burano is well known for lace, and there are still some shops where you can find the older generation working at their lace making. The items we bought were reasonably priced, and there were many nice little shops to peruse. My only word of warning would be the vaparetto off the island. The line was very long and people were very pushy waiting to get on. Nonetheless, it was definitely worth visiting Burano.

I liked the island of Burano very much. Like many other visitors, I was enchanted by its colors and lovely atmosphere. It is undoubtedly a photographer's paradise. It is worth to visit this island, walking among the colorful houses, sitting in a cafe, shopping and enjoying this place.

This is one of our favourite trips away from the city of venice. A long trip on two different waterbuses, but well worth while when you arrive.
The different coloured houses are breathtaking - done this way so when the fisherman came back at night, they just looked for the colour of their house. Several small canals and bridges, great shops and places to have lunch

Look. It takes 40 minutes to get there from Venice, at a cost of 10 euro for the ticket. And once you’re there and you see a handful of brightly coloured houses, there really isn’t much else to do unless you’re interested in getting some lace. It’s basically popular because of Instagrammers wanting to get the perfect shot, but honestly save the time and go to Lido instead.

I came here and was very surprised that there were negative reviews. How can one not like this beauty of all the colors of the rainbow or cause negative emotions? I walked along the streets, along the canals, and the smile never left my face. Dollhouses with cute details were simply delightful and gave a lot of positivity in our difficult times, when the world has completely gone crazy. In many homes, the laundry being dried is clearly color-coordinated. Yes, this is a tourist “village”, but it is so nice, so different from the rest of Venice. It took about an hour to sail here, I had a ticket for 3 days, but with this trip to Murano-Burano it probably paid for itself. But if you are in Venice for at least 3 days, be sure to go, it’s 100% worth it. Yes, and you need to take a break from visiting museums and churches, change direction a little. You can safely skip Murano; in my opinion, you won’t see anything new there. But Burano... There weren’t many people in November, you could easily get lost in the labyrinth of streets, and then go out to the canal and watch how this beauty is reflected in the water. And to be completely secluded, you can go to the seashore, where only seagulls will keep you company. The November sun also made us happy, giving us a sunset of fabulous beauty on the way back, its brightness rivaling the colors of Burano.

Certainly worth a water trip to visit this beautiful island. The small canals are lined with colourful houses, shops and restaurants which just add to the experience.
We took an early morning Actv waterbus from Fondamente Nove, which also stopped at Murano. Check out Venicelink for travel day passes.

We jumped on a vaporetto from Venice and in just 40 minutes disembarked to a vibrant, beautiful island which at the time of our visit was a very warm and sunny Thursday in March. We have visited Burano before and it was well worth the trip back. It is a peaceful, extremely pretty little island with many shops, cafes and restaurants and is one of the most picturesque places we have ever been.
We had a wander around its non-crowded streets into little courtyards and visited some lovely shops selling an array of locally made items. We stopped for a drink by the canal, pottered some more then stopped for lunch at another restaurant by a canal.
A wonderful way to spend a few hours - and so easy to get there by vaporetto from the F.te Nove stop in Venice.

Were here as a small "youth group" (3 people from 20-29)
The island is also known as “beautiful Venice” and not unjustly so. The houses are all brightly coloured and individually painted, there is no road and there are canals all over the islands.
To reach by ferry from Lido di Jesolo in about 45min incl. drive. Ferry costs 10€ per person
There are also lots of glassware from Murano (the Glass Island) on offer here. Gives some nice souvenirs.
The church with its leaning tower is also a highlight

We were on lengthy Global Eurailpasses with my self designed itinerary unfortunately placing us in Venice on a weekend, not ideal.
The early November 2022 weather was however fine and sunny. 16 degrees.
We enjoyed walking along the tiny canal.
Shops had a sameness to them. The colourful three storey houses were interesting.
The vaporetto journey back to San Marco was tedious as these were very crowded. It did not help that the captain was the poorest so far. An uncomfortable 40 minutes.

is it worth staying in Burano or should I just do a day trip from Venice?
Written July 5, 2019
I would stay in Venice and go to Burano for a day, by waterbus. Burano is small, you can walk through it in 3 hours.
