We booked a ferry independently as we wanted to decide how long to stay and not be dictated to and also because we had been to Murano previously. For €20 you can get a 24 hour pass and come and go as you please. Burano is a stunning town with all the different coloured buildings and gorgeous shops selling lace. I am definitely not a lace person but even I had to buy the most beautiful black lace evening wrap. My friend went potty with table covers and shawls. We had an excellent inexpensive lunch with house wine (when in Italy you know its going to be good) They ferry takes 45 minutes so take that into account when planning your day. Definitely a must

If you’re planning a trip to Venice, you absolutely should not miss Burano Italy, an incredible colorful island nearby. it is one of the loveliest places to visit and so beautiful, I could not stop taking pictures! Visiting Burano is a super easy day (or half-day) trip from Venice. It’s impossible to be anything but happy on this beautiful little island. The brightly colored fisherman's houses are just so lovely and the shops filled with the most delicate pieces of lace. Burano is still a prominent fishing village to this day. The fish sold daily at the Rialto Market in Venice is from the fisherman of Burano. The best way to get to Burano is by the Vaporetto (water bus) from Fondament Nove in Venice. The number 12 line runs every 30 minutes and takes about 45 minutes to reach Burano. It also stops at Murano, so you can hop on and off here as well. One may question -Why Are the Houses So Colorful in Burano Italy? Actually they serve an important purpose. Burano is a fishing village. After a long day at sea, the fishermen would return in their boats to the narrow canals with lines of houses that all looked similar. A tradition began to paint the houses in bright colors so they could easily find their way home (and distinguish it from their neighbor’s) after a long day of fishing. If a homeowner in Burano wants to paint their house today, they have to submit an application first. Then the government will then respond with which colors the house is permitted to be painted. Burano is less than one square mile in size, so it’s very easy to explore on foot. You can spend a couple of hours wandering down the narrow streets, admiring the beautiful houses, and popping into the bakeries and lace shops. See The Leaning Tower Of Burano Italy! Pisa isn’t the only town in Italy with a leaning tower! This former bell tower at San Martino Church dates back to the 15th century. and you must try Gelato in Burano It would be a shame to get so close to this charming little island and miss seeing it!

We used the water ferry service from Venice to visit. Get a day pass (24 hours unlimited rides) to take in this island and any of the others that appeal to you. One ferry makes the rounds. As others have mentioned, this island is a riot of colorful homes and businesses. Take your time and talk to people. There are restaurants and shops, but we most enjoyed the area free from "Italian" knock offs and crowds.

Take a 1/2 day boat to discover the islands around Venice. Burano is a great place to spend a few hours, check out some shops, relax, and have a meal. Great place for photography...with the canal running down the middle of the main street. Recommended.

Vaporetto from Train station to Murano was about an hour. After landing there it is nice and easy walking tour through the island. We walked up and down the various "canals" and the buildings and houses are amazing in beauty and colour. Don't rush through it since this place is worth to spend few hours time. Stopped at few restaurants for snacks and drinks and since the day was very sunny we felt like at summer holidays. After all from start in the morning until return to Venice it was a day trip!
