The Castle, a feud of the branches of the Malaspina del Ramo Fiorito holdings from the fourteenth to the eighteenth century, is of great importance historically, and above all, architecturally. The construction of the massive fortress, which merges with the underlying sandstone rock so the whole structure seems carved in stone, began in the second half of the twelfth century.

It's a hair-raising drive up in to the hills, but such a great reward at the end! The castle is completely authentic, and nearly tourist-free. We took the "Italian only" tour, but were so gratified that the guide did his best to help us understand everything. It is also possible to rent rooms at the castle--wish we had known that!

We went on a Friday in mid-June as a day trip from the Tuscan beaches after reading several of the reviews on here. We also made sure to check the website for the castle tour times. Despite checking the website, we found when we arrived the castle tour times were completely different from those on the website (website said there... More

It is a magnificent sight as you drive towards it, especially if you approach from Giucano where I was staying. If you come from the other side of the town you will pass under the fort without seeing it. It hangs on the end of cliff and towers above the roads below, its feet covered with trees. As per the... was a dark day full of clouds and wind. After a real heavy thunderstorm we decide to visit the castle, a group of 15 people between Greeks and English. the location is impressive, the story and the legend amazing. The guide very good and useful, his English was good also. price is ok considering is a private castle.

We actually stayed in the B&B rooms of this working castle/museum and it was fabulous. Views, history, village below. Ability to have free run of the castle with keys to unlock doors etc.... We explored at night with torches. Very very special

This was our second time here. The last time we did not have a tour of the castle but we did this time. It was very interesting and very informative. Go but make sure you can take the tour. Glad we came back.

The view from the castle is amazing, we passed through a winding road from Sarzana. Castle still kept in it's natural ambient.

Castello Malaspina is accessed via a very winding, narrow road from Sarzana, Italy. Take care when using this road. The castle is unspoiled and provides a breathtaking view towards the coast that leads to Cinque Terre. This castle is in a region that probably has more castles within a small area than any other region. Fosdinovo is a quaint, medieval... More

If you are looking for a place that gives you the possibility to have a full immersion into the Middle Ages, this is the one. Very inspirational for children and adults because the castle is kept in its original conditions but still well preserved. You will be given a tour showcasing some weapons, family crests and the bedroom where Dante... More

Personally, I liked very much the visit to this castle and the whole place around. Such a beautiful piece of history and a great panoramic view of the whole city down to the sea side. I strongly recommend this visit if you are in the region. Enjoy it...
