About
We are fourth generation farmers who love the land! Now turned vignerons, our vines, draw from the rich soils of Mt Barker in the Great Southern region of Western Australia and exhibit the terroir of this exceptional region. Our vines which were first planted in 1985 (24 acres of vineyard) produce fantastic Riesling, Shiraz, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. Our cellar door was first opened in 1990. The cellar door was established in the old apple packing shed which was used by the first two generations of Gilberts. It retains its history and character today creating a unique environment for you to sample and enjoy our award winning wines. In 2003 we extended onto the cellar door our cafe. The cafe showcases fresh and local produce. Enjoy the fantastic flavours of our region, The Great Southern: Mount Barker. The cafe and cellar door is the perfect spot to relax and unwind in a beautiful environment with amazing views of the Porongurup Mountain Range.

We must have gone on a really ‘bad’ day. The food was probably the lowest quality we’ve had anywhere. Dry chicken and a few pieces of sweet potato on a bed of greens. A lack of creativity and quality left us feeling ripped off. I’d be embarrassed to serve the food to anyone in my own kitchen.

It's rare you leave a restaurant and need to pull over to throw up 5 minutes later, but this was the reality after a recent visit here

A bisque starter - perhaps one of the easiest dishes to throw together was laden with whole peppercorns. Not one or two, but minus the many I had already bit into, I extracted a further thirty two WHOLE peppercorns for what was no more than a cup of soup. My friend another thirty from her bowl...62+ peppercorns in any pot of soup would be obscene, but in our dishes alone - revolting and unforgivable.

This Feedback given to the waitress saw absolutely no one come out and explain. Simply, we were ignored and our beef pies followed.

I have no idea how you can not make a good beef pie filling, and in case Gilbert's is reading this let me offer some very basic advice for a very basic recipe - onions, garlic, beef, red wine, tomato paste, a little salt and cook it slowly for hours. Cool overnight, re-heat slowly, fill the pie dishes, slap on a pastry lid and cook.

I do not know what you added to that beef mix, but even Oliver Twist wouldn't have lined up with his empty bowl and starving eyes pleading for "more".

Gluggy, tasteless, vile and oddly dry, it was beyond an insult following the oddly peppered soup.

The thought that we had to now pay for this insulting meal was unfathomable - for I fear the cook, and I say cook for no one could have qualified as a chef and cooked that trash - was in the kitchen recycling the peppercorns!

Again, we relayed our disappointment upon payment at which time the waitress said "oh yes, I heard. Sorry about that, it was the bottom of the soup pot and all the peppercorns were scooped up."

Dear God! Are you a bunch of fools? Who,with a pulse would ever have considered 60+ peppercorns in any dish to be normal. Seriously? You think it was just two bowls of bad soup - either sack your cook or shut your cafe because it was a crime to charge us for that foul food.

Out of the "goodness" of the lady's heart she offered to give us a soup for free... I wanted to offer to give the cook a lesson on, oh, I don't know... How to cook!!

It was beyond insulting that even though 60 peppercorns was enough to kill a person they thought we ought to still pay for one bowl!

As I began this review, it did indeed end with my friend petitioning me to pull over - which I did just in time for her to hurl her entire foul meal up. This followed further similar episodes before she was confident to get back in the car.

A sense of responsibility fell over us as we contemplated the wildlife which might unfortunately come across her stomach content. But as we both agreed animals are way better at acting on their instinct than humans are - for we should have followed our gut instinct (literally) and left after the bisque.

Please, if you own this venue, be absolutely clear, owning a winery does not give you permission to open a cafe and assume you can abuse the goodwill of tourists who drop by. Your menu is small and simple - which is fine - yet even this basic offering is too complicated for you.

Absolutely and unquestionably the worst meal I have ever paid for. The least you can do is donate what you charged us to a charity who might in fact be able to feed the homeless better than you can feed the tourists.

Dropped in on the way back from Albany to Perth and, in truth, sampled the wine only as an excuse to use the toilet. Wheee! It was a light bulb moment -- this Gilberts riesling is truly awesome, crisp and dry, and we headed on up the highway with a six-pack in the boot. Best on ground in the Great Southern, is my opinion. Spilled some down our friends' throats at weekend barbie and they loved it, too. Gotta stop in for some more next month. By the way, toilet was clean, too.

Gilberts built their reputation on the back of their truly outstanding Riesling. Wine Guru James Halliday has constantly top rated the wine. It does not stop there. The Chardonnay and Shiraz are also earning Gilberts an enviable reputation. The rustic setting of the cafe and tasting area is very appropriate for the setting and the staff are invariably friendly. You will almost certainly be served my either Bev or Jim Gilbert at some point.

It’s not all about the wine at Gilberts. The quality of the food in the cafe is superb. Bev manages to source the best of local Great Southern produce and selects veg and herbs from their own garden. My first experience here was with Asparagus Fettuccini, which was truly inspiring. A fantastic dish

We were so impressed with what Bev and Jim had to offer that Amanda and myself arranged to stage our wedding at the winery. The whole event was superb. Bev and Jim were so helpful throughout the whole process of organising and staffing the event, we had the best day of our lives.

I’ve visited Gilberts many times over the last 16 years and have never failed to enjoy every minute I’ve spent there

If I lived locally I would make this place a regular haunt. We had a crisp white Riesling with our shared platter and we were not disappointed. The staff were happy & obliging & made suggestions for other sites to visit. We left with another bottle of wine.

Excellent friendly staff with a great selection of wine! Riesling was really great. Usually a sav blanc drinker however may be converted! Also served a lovely lunch which appeared to be a rarity for wineries in this region. Highly recommended.

This is a fabulous family run business that sells very good wine and reasonable prices.
It is also open for meals and serves great food.

We randomly popped in on our drive home as we needed to feed the baby. We were made to feel very welcome. Kids had a fruit platter and we ordered a Meat Platter. Generous sizing and very enjoyable lunch. Coffee was nice also. Would definitely recommend to others who are passing by.
