My wife, daughter and I are very irregular horse riders (I think we've all each only ever been on a horse 3 times each), but when we were looking for things to do for our holiday to NI, I decided that a family ride was a brilliant idea. I did some googling and came across Sheans which looked to fit the bill nicely, offering a variety of options for rides. Initially I enquired about a beach ride as I had visions of something from a Scottish Widows advert, galloping along the sands with the sea spraying around us. Sensibly the team suggested that one of the treks instead, so we booked that and added it to the itinerary. Come the day it was drizzling a bit and on the drive down I had this sudden image of us just trudging round and round a small paddock or inside a barn so my mood started to droop slightly. However, low spirits are no match for Donal, who greeted us and started kitting us out with boots and helmets. The man does not lack for personality and immediately I felt the day improving, especially after the three of us were presented with our steeds for the day. My daughter had Joe, a lovely little pony who behaved brilliantly given she was a novice rider, my wife was mounted on Turbo (though the only thing he did swiftly was take every opportunity to grab a snack), and I had Leo (solid and dependable). My spirits did droop a little again as we headed inside the barn on our horses, but no sooner were we in than the back door opened and we were out again following a lovely track around fields. We encountered streams, hills, rocks, hedges, trees and equine personality on our trek. I spent most of the time grinning like a buffoon but that was entirely down to having such a great time. All three horses behaved brilliantly and Roisin and her team kept everyone safe and buoyed as we went along. Our daughter who has only ever had a trek with someone leading the pony was in complete control, whilst one of the team walked alongside her, she had the reins and was responsible for her riding - she felt like such a big grown up girl, it was amazing. When we eventually returned to the barn it didn't end there. Roisin taught us how to trot - approaching the 40 mark and I was giggling like a toddler as I bounced up and down in my saddle as Leo trundled around the space with my daughter in the lead. By the time it was finished I was sorely tempted to go and ask Donal for another go, but sadly we had an itinerary to follow :(

A truly stupendous and definitely memorable day, my daughter and wife now want riding lessons.... I blame Donal, Roisin and the other team members for what I suspect is going to become an expensive past time...

Thank you everyone!

It is with great enthusiasm that I share this review of Sheans Horse Farm. As a beginner rider I was hopeful that my riding experience would be as fun and fulfilling as imagined. The lessons not only increased my skill level but they exceeded my expectations of how much fun it would be. The staff were patient instructors who guided and encouraged while ensuring I had the most amazing time. The horse assigned to me was sweet and handsome and perfectly matched to my riding ability. It had always been a dream of mine to ride a horse on the beach and after two days of wonderful lessons through the beautiful hillsides, my dreams of horseback riding on the beach became a reality that was more exhilarating and rewarding than I could have ever imagined. The hospitality was uplifting and heartwarming and the owners and staff did everything to ensure my time on my horse was memorable and meaningful. I highly recommend booking any of your desired horse riding experiences through Sheans Horse Farm.

Amazing place and wonderful staff. First visited here in July during a short break and have had to return at least 5 or 6 times since because it was so much fun. Have experienced both hacks and beach rides. Staff are friendly and easily put our minds at rest about her rides. Most enjoyable days of the summer and worth extra early starts on Saturday mornings,

I did the full day beach ride with my neice and friend, we all absolutely loved it. You will definitely not be disappointed. The day started at 7am at the yard, with a hack around the farm to find your 'feet' on the horse. Then onto Ballintoy where you get to enjoy the beautiful scenery while making our way to the beach. Plenty of canters on very well behaved horses, up through the dunes finishing up around 12.30. Great day, I will be doing it again ...soon hopefully!

Had the most amazing full day ride on the north Antrim coast. We spent the morning riding to the beach and had lots of gallops and canters plus a play in the water before having a wonderful lunch in Ballintoy. The ride in the hills in the afternoon was challenging but fun with great views all the way from Scotland to Donegal. Great horses and great company. Would recommend this for experienced riders wanting a decent ride with mixture of fast and slow paced. The scenery was stunning even in November

We booked a Forest Ride for myself (51) and daughter (16). We are both experienced riders, and this Day Ride would not be suitable for novice or unfit riders. We had to have an assessment ride prior to the day to ensure we were competent. The assessment ride itself was great fun, accompanied by Oonagh.

The ride was planned to meet at 8.30am, but unfortunately I got a bit lost, completely my fault. The guides were very patient and directed us to the start point via mobile phone. We were mounted and ready to go by 9am.

The horses were ideal for the day, excellent temperaments, willing and safe. Tack was well fitting and suitable. The experience of the riders was well matched.

The Guides, Fergal, Melissa and Paul, knew the horses very well. They were very open before booking that this Forest Ride was a fairly new ride compared to the Beach Rides that they have been doing for a long time. They were very eager to accommodate the preferences of the group, and to get a lot of feedback, which they took on board.

The trails we rode were generally easy, with no tough terrain. There was lots of opportunity for trot and canter, and a little gallop, but on an 8 hour ride, I would prefer the majority to be walk, and my group agreed, however the Guides were clear that we could have increased the pace and frequency if preferred (within the limits of horse health and safety). The horses were definitely fit enough to have worked more than we did. But the Guides were protective of their horses and refused to canter the horses on a beach surface that was not suitable.

The Ride included lunch at a local pub which was well received and delicious.

Overall a fantastic day out for experienced riders, lovely guides and great horses. They are very open to feedback and looking to improve the experience.

Such a great experience for a full family outing. All 10 family members joined in, ranging from age 9 to a 57 years old. We all had different abilities and levels of horse riding but yet everyone was raving about it when complete. The staff at the farm were exceptional and made the experience even better! We will most definitely be back- thank you Sheans farm 👏

If I could pick Sheans Horae Farm up and move it to Belfast I would be there every day. I truly love this place! Every time we have went we are made to feel very welcome (even though we are not very good lol) the staff are always so friendly and encouraging and dont make you feel self conscious at all. They have a fabulous range of horses to fit all shapes and sizes and they are as well behaved as they are beautiful!

My most recent visit i brought my two nephews and it was their first time visiting the place, their first time on a horse infact and watching their confidence grow throughout the trek was incredible! Needless to say they want to come back again and again.

I would 100% recommend Sheans Horse Farm to anyone who will listen! And i will return again and again and again!!

We booked the Farmer wants a wife Hen Party package at Sheans, and honestly it was the best craic! Everyone was so friendly, helpful and fun. I have a bit of a fear of horses and despite my 10 minute teary breakdown whilst getting on the horse, Carly, Donal and Oran helped me fight that fear and I managed a 45 minute sucessful horse trek alongside the other hens! The hen party package is so well thought out, from cutting turf, herding sheep from one field to another, a jiving class-(Donal has some quere moves) and cookery class-we all managed to Bake decent looking farmers wife scones! Alongside lots of other wee games and a bit of competitive craic, ending with a delish homecooked afternoon tea, I couldnt have asked for a better Hen Party activity. 100% recommend.
If you're looking for something different for your hen party, are city slickers like us and want a fun taste of the farmers wife life, with a stunning horse trek thrown in, this is where it's at. You won't be disappointed!

I had about 36 hours of solo time before I met up with my 3 sisters and 6 adult nieces in Dublin where we planned our tour of Ireland for a week. I’m a lover and owner of horses from Middle Georgia, USA, but not a claimed expert rider although I’ve logged lots of hours on horseback and spent my fair share of time mucking stalls....my dream has been to ride Irish (I learned at the farm not English) style on an Irish sport horse in the Irish countryside and coast like my ancestors! Young Daniel McKinley, such a gentleman, showed up on his own time after I called him for a rescue (in the early morning before his coffee😉) on the outside of Ballycastle so I may find my way to the farm and get my google maps working accurately. I safely arrived but not on time.
No worries!
I met Maggie, Anna and her fabulously fun and helpful father Jake, his wife Maria (forgive me if I got your names wrong, just trying to recall all the great folks I encountered?) and my expert trekker and companion Elisha! All wonderful and warm and welcoming equestrians! Elisha made my trek fun and adventuresome, the scenery is stunning mind you, by just being herself and letting me set the pace, Luke the horse was a fantastic Irish draft and so much a professional just like Elisha. I will be back for sure with my sons and husband for a group ride! Folks, please don’t hesitate to book an experience with this great farm! Shean’s Horse Farm is an fantastic adventure and the horses and people are all fun professionals!!! Dream come true for me!
