Vrontisi Monastery, located northwest of Zaros, is one of the most renowned and important monasteries on Crete, serving as a noteworthy centre for letters and arts during the Cretan Renaissance and the scholars, artists and venerable monks of Vrontisi Monastery sealed the era with their presence during the final centuries of the era of Venetian rule.
The Monastery was possibly founded during the 2nd Byzantine era and reached its peak during the Venetian era, entering its decline after the Ottoman conquest of Crete in 1669, during which it was often the victim of Ottoman brutality.
The destruction of the Monastery suffered during the 19th century in particular was fatal for an enormous number of relics. Only a few traces remain of the cultural peak of one of the premier centers of the Cretan Renaissance.
Most of the monastery buildings have been destroyed, but their fortress-type characteristics can still be seen, with a two-aisled church at the centre dedicated to Saint Anthony and Saint Thomas.
Outside the monastery, beneath the century-old plane trees, there is one of the most remarkable sculptures of rural Crete, reminiscent of the peak of the monastery. This is a carved fountain with the water gushing out of the mouths of three lions, while the relief is completed with the depiction of Adam and Eve.

We visited the monastery during our winter vacations in Zaros village. The monastery has a very nice view, it's up the mountain. Nice architecture and an old water source-fountain worth the visit.

Just in front of the entrance to the monastery, there is a 15th century Venetian fountain with Adam and Eve reliefs. Local people come here with many plastic bottles and fill them with water from the fountain.

this monastery was included in a Highlights of Crete day tour and we were not aware we were visiting it, however it is a beautiful site with 3 or 4 different buildings, one church and a museum. the monk who took our money didnt seem to trust any of us and followed us everywhere .I didnt feel i gained any knowledge on the greek orthodox faith after this visit

Beautiful monastery in a peaceful setting. Obviously a cared for place with lots of plants in pots. Don't miss the Adam and Eve fountain where you can fill your water bottles with sweet spring water. Definitely worth a visit but not a detour.

We visited the monastery by accident as we saw it signposted when we were out in our hire car. 2 adults, 2 pensioners and an 8 year old. Lovely place. Lots to read up on about the lives of the monks and nuns in years gone past. The nuns still live there and the stop and talk to you as you walk round. Very interesting people. The guest shop is a bit pricey. Worth a visit. There is a vineyard about 5 minutes drive away.

If I was religious this is where I would be. A calm and cool oasis after a good hot walk through the olive groves with the eagles flying overhead

had a look at a crete monastery as part a coach trip visiting a few places . worth a visit, prices to get in are ok and is very clean . just worth going if you are wanting a change of scenery as its out in the sticks near a little village , nice views and people there
