When driving from Portugal to the village of Alcantara, you will have to cross the “Tagus River” and this by the “Roman Bridge of Alcantara”. This architectural work was built into the second century AD. The author had written”Pontem perpetui masvrvm in secula mundi” which...More

On our way back home from Madrid, we took the EX-207 (among other roads) to go through Marvão, and that put us unknowingly on a course over the ancient bridge over the River Tajo/Tejo near Alcántara. An amazing sight! And from reading the interpretive signs...More

This was an amazing site due to its antiquity- @103 AD!! Knowing Romans used the bridge so long ago is plenty to think about!! A beautiful area! Although a bit far from Madrid, the sites in Extremadura are worth traveling to.

OK, it is clear from the information boards that it has been restored but that does not detract from the supremely impressive piece of architecture that it is. Seemingly one of the six best pieces of Roman work surviving and I don't doubt it. Well...More

The bridge was spectacular and it was amazing to wonder how the Romans had managed to build this bridge 2000 or so years ago. There was, however, the feeling that this was not quite the original and that it had been restored many times during...More

This bridge, nearing its two-thousandth birthday, is both beautiful and functional - modern load limt - unlimited! The gorge that it crosses is also very picturesque. There is a very nice parking area on the Spanish side of the bridge. Its importance in earlier times...More

Just the thought that the Romans built with a view to the future and how history has shown what a marvellous structure it is.

It is amazing that this bridge was built by the Romans and we cans still drive on it! Stop, get out and marvel at this structure. Stop and wonder if in 1,500 years someone else will be doing the same.

You can actually drive across the old Roman Bridge, which is worth doing to go and see the view of the lake above the dam. Look for the sign 'mirador'.
