Saw the river on two occassions - once on a tour from Tbilisi to Kazbegi and other time from the Jvari monastery. From the military highway, it looks like a normal mountain stream. However, the best view is from the Jvari monastery where it meets the Mtkvari. You can see the two rivers of different colors - one black (actually a muddy grey) and one white meeting and then proceeding as one. The difference in colors is due to the different mineral contents of the two rivers.

It is a beautiful sight and definitely worth a short photo stop while visiting the monastery.

Its miracle to see two colors river flowing together without mixing each other. Must visit place if you are planning to visit Georgia. Aragvi river there is rafting but during winter its too cold for this activity.

If you are driving along the river, there are several providers for white water rafting. Our provider was good and all safety precautions were taken. He navigated us us expertly down the river for about 30 minutes. It was a nice experience but do not expect serious rapids, at least in the month of August. It's good family fun though.

Coming from Tbilissi and driving along the Russian Military Highway to Jvari Pass or Kazbegi, you will experience the beauty of the river Aragvi. It will be your companion for quite some time, and you will be able to see how this wild river changes size and colour. The landscape near the river or in the background will be increasingly breathtaking the higher you will get but you will also pass by ruins from the Soviet era, or by dilapidated buildings, the sight of which you will not like. The source of the Aragvi lies to the north of Gudauri, from where it flows down via Ananuri to Mtskheta. In fact, there are seven rivers that feed the Aragvi on the whole.

This is truly one of the hidden gems in Georgia. A 45 minute ride to Jvari Monastery will give you a 180 degrees view of the magnificent Jvari River. Truly a spectacular sight specially if you are in Jvari Monastery overlooking Mtskheta.

You'll see this view while heading to Gudauri. Few meters away from Ananuri Fortress. Be early to avoid the big buses stopping here for pictures.

During our day trip, we spent a time driving along this river surrounded, by amazing scenery, we stopped on occasion next to it, for a leg stretch, with pop up stalls offering local wares such as honey, the beauty of the river just added to a wonderful day.
