The main attraction for me is Keketuohai UNESCO Global Geopark, also known as, Xinjiang Rare Metals National Mine Park, located at No. 9 Jianshe Road, cocoa Sea town, Fuyun County, Xinjiang. Interesting to see the open pit mine.

Koktokay National Park ( translated into Mandarin as “Keketuohai” National Park) is located in the Altay region in northern Xinjiang, Koktokay National Park (often is renowned for rocks with different shapes (most prominent bell shaped). On both sides of the valley, white birches and pines are deeply rooted on the rocks and grow very well, as it is autumn the foliage turns yellow and red. Walking in the deep and serene valley along the Irtysh river is breath taking.Hiking among rocks offers you an unforgettable experience. There are lots of sheep, cow and camel along way to the park. From the gate of the Keketuo Hai Geopark to Cocoa Sullivan Lake, you need to travel about 22-23 kilometers.Legend has it that a graceful fairy gave up the life in the paradise and went down to Sullivan Lake to be together with her swan lover. Since then, the lake gradually became a home to hundreds of swans and nicknamed “Swan Lake”. The lake has lots of aquatic plants and lots of beautiful floating islands with beautiful flowering plants make this a very attractive location for photography and it also attracts lot of wild ducks, swans and geese.

Keketuohai National Park is sometimes called Chinese Yosemite is 60 km from Fuyun City. We stayed overnight the night before at YuanFang Hotel in Keketuohaizhen (town) itself and was able to be at the park gates at opening time. The town was basically developed for the workers of No 3 mine but increasing there are more tourists coming this way and are willing to spend more than half a day in the park. If you google Keketuohai, you will find several articles written by climbers outside China. From the spot where you get dropped off by the internal bus, it is a good 7+ km hike to the hot spring and waterfall. It is true that there is nothing much to see at the hot spring as it is probably being built over by the resort hotel still under construction (in Sep 2016). The waterfall was unassuming. We found the hike into the valley most enjoyable as it gets less crowded as we go deeper into the valley. The rock formation, poplar trees and the clear running water of the Irtysh River. We were slightly early for the autumn colours as the trees are getting yellow only at the top of the ridges. However, we were able to be in the middle of the Kazakh herdsmen migrating season where they bring their herds of sheep and cattle down from the mountains to the lowlands for the winter. The whole hike into and out the valley plus a detour up the ridge along the main road, together with lunch at the Kazakh tea house took us over 8 hours. The butter tea is also a highlight of our hike.

Date of visit: 17/09/2016 (half a day is enough) Price: 126 yuan - From your hotel (unless you have arrangement to sleep inside the park) to the entrance, you'll probably need a ride that cost 10 yuan each - ID is needed to by the ticket - If you go there at opening time, wait in front of the right door of the ticket office because the only security check is just there - After paying the ticket, you'll have to take an internal bus (already paid) to go to the site To get there from Buerjin (布尔津): - Take the bus to beitun (北屯) which last around 1h30 and cost 20 yuan. There is a bus every hour. - Take the bus to keketuohai (可可托海) which more than 6 hours and cost 54 yuan. If you are short in time and have to make a choice between Kanasi natural reserve and this one, I recommend you Kanasi. There are interesting rock formations and spots along keketuohai but the waterfall doesn't worth it and the hot spring spot (by the time I'm writing this) is undergoing some tuning. Moreover Kanasi is much more diversified in terms of landscapes. Hope it helps
