La parrocchia vanta origini antichissime. Sulla scorta infatti di un prezioso documento custodito presso la Biblioteca Vaticana, viene dimostrata la maggiore antichità e celebrità della Cattedra Telesina in opere tanto da meritare un Rescritto Laudatorio voluto da Leone XII. Dal documento risulta infatti che il 19 settembre del 465 Florenzio, già vescovo di Telesia, era intervenuto, unitamente ad altri 45 confratelli, al Concilio Romano II indetto da Papa Ilario. Anche se questo fatto in questo caso, non lascia automaticamente pensare che se Florenzio è stato il primo vescovo di cui si ha notizia scritta, la Cattedra Telesina doveva già essere costituita. Telesia ad ogni buon conto è stata un centro religioso di notevole importanza anche prima della distruzione saracena.
