Overview
Viewing whales in the wild is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for many, so make the most of the chance on this Hervey Bay cruise. Riding a smaller-than-standard boat means you’ll enjoy water-level views of the bay’s humpbacks while keeping a respectful distance. With luck, see mothers and calves; and hear whale songs via a hydrophone. An onboard naturalist provides commentary for extra insight, while a choice of departures gives you flexibility.

We had been on a bigger boat just 2 days before and though both went to Platypus Bay off Fraser Island to look for humpback whales our trip with PWFA was much more successful. As we were were only 38 passengers in a one level boat we could get much closer (still keeping within legal distances). However at one point a whale literally swam under our boat - and surfaced about 30m away and then proceeded to pec slap at us. Our young guide Nicki had recently started at the company and her knowledge, enthusiasm and glee at whale spotting was infectious to all of us. They do not do transfers though so you need to get to the Great Sandy Straits Marina wharf yourself.

I have been on the larger boats 🚢 but this was so much better. There were soo many whales and they came right up to the small boat. They even went underneath.3 hours was enough time out there with young kids.

The Pacific Whale Foundation run a small group tour out to see the whales. You are fabulously close to the water level for easy viewing. The staff are qualified and highly knowledgable. It's wonderful knowing all the profits go back to research for these magnificent creatures. We had an absolutely fabulous day with multiple sightings and the full range of spectacular behaviours on display. Soooo lucky. Wonderful.

This is my fourth adventure out with Pacific Whale Foundation and while each one has been different, each trip has been consistently professional, educational and awesome. With naturalists on board and a crew that knows the waters inside and out, Pacific Whale Foundation will alwats be my first choice for whale watching in Hervey Bay.
