Walked from Aborives en Royans. Very interesting to see these houses built on top of a cliff face. Nice park opposite to sit and picnic.
On the top of the road when you look down and across it is amazing to think how difficult it must be to paint them etc.
Nearby cafes.

A great place to visit! We went for a day trip by car with two kids and did not know quite what to expect. Down by the river we had a lovely view of the houses, and it was a quiet and relaxing area. The kids found great joy in playing with all the round rocks by the bank and looking at fishes in the water.
Would definitely recommend a visit.

On our way to the Valence we stop in this little town. It is imposing how houses are built on a rock that are near river.

Impressive building. A round-trip walk on both riversides brings you to the park where on some evenings a market wigh local products and streetfood is worth visiting

This is our third times here. We were never tired to see these old houses suspended on the cliff of a river bank. People can take pictures from many angles. This is just magnificent !

Nice place to relax and to have lunch near the river in the shade of trees. The view is beautiful. Parking nearby.
Parents should watch their children in the river: in a few minutes the river can become deeper and wild because of the sluice system upriver. Reportedly, there is an alarm system, however.

The drive up from the Rhone Valley via Saint-Nazaire-en-Royans through Pont-en-Royans up the Isere River Gorge to the Caves at Chorance and on to Villard de Lans and back down to Grenoble is magical. This is a very beautiful part of France. The hanging houses are amazing... with little outhouses where human waste dropped straight down into the pristine mountain stream below. One of my favorite drives in France.

We came here because we had read positive reviews on tripadvisor. We didn't expect this little village could be so nice. You can have a look at the "maisons suspendues" from a lovely park at the bottom of the mountain. It is very pleasant to have a walk in the surroundings.

While I would not necessarily make a special detour to see the suspended houses in Pont-en-Royans, they are neat to see and create a picturesque setting.
We were fortunate to be staying in town, so we enjoyed going down to the river and gazing at the houses suspended over the river. We also saw a pretty crazy event last night....musicians were suspended under the bridge playing music! The instruments that were in the air were: a grand piano, a bass, a set of drums, and a saxophone! It was crazy. One of the musicians was in a wheelchair, and he was suspended too! While this is not an every day occurrence, the suspended houses were a great backdrop for this event.

These are quite pretty houses on the side of the river but to be honest its the natural gorge the village is based in that is so spectacular. The houses themselves arent really "suspended" just built up from the riverside below.
