Interactive museum
Apr 2021 • Family
The museum is free of charge but full of interactive activities. It is suitable for everyone, from young kids to adults. You will learn a lot about nz police about history, uniform, job nature and so on. You can have self guided activity according to your age. It is interesting. The staff was very friendly and helpful. She gave us briefing about the museum and let us know what we could do, such as fingerprint machine and photo booth. There are different police uniform for guests to try! Love it! We went there on easter holiday so no paid education activities were available. It was a pity but it also gives us reasons to visit again! Before going, i contacted the museum via email. They replied quickly personally. I am impressed! There will be police dog activity in April! It should be fun!
I think it is the best to drive to the museum but taking bus from wellington is ok too.
Prepare about 1 hour would be enough.

Wear the uniform

Brilliant museum. There are exhibits on all sorts of NZ criminal history. You can also put on a variety of uniforms ancient and modern and have your photo taken on a BMW R80, not had so much fun in a museum before.

Fabulous entertainment for kids
Jan 2020 • Family
I visited with 3 children aged 8 and 10 during the January school holidays and we all loved solving the mystery crime which had us all thinking and carefully reading all the evidence. We also loved the dress up, motorbike and photo booth. Never expected such great entertainment and my 8 year old has made me promise to take him back every holidays to solve each new mystery.

Very interesting and well set out display, really enjoyed the history and the true evidence of known crime.
Would recommend this museum to everyone.
Having a 10 year old with a dream of becoming a police officer, this visit has just cemented her dream.

Thoroughly enjoyed it
Jan 2020
First visit despite living in Wellington for over 15 years. It was great!!! Went with my 3 year old son and husband, everyone had a great time. Lots of kids activities and for the adults there are some really wow objects on display that are connected to some very big moments in the history of the New Zealand Police - such as evidence from the Aramoana massacre. The new Erebus exhibition was really well done - highly recommend.

Enjoyable free museum

A great little spot to check out in Porirua. Plenty of things to look at including an interesting insight into some of NZs darker moments. Some aspects were a little out of date but interesting all the same.
Was very interested to read the history of traffic policing and abortion law in NZ, illegal weapons were also an interesting surprise.

Great History lesson
Oct 2019 • Family
We visited and spent over an hour here. Not a big museum but a lot of history to take in, particularly on past major events that saw heroic actions and some fatal sacrifices by police officers. A great visit for our son who is looking to join the police force in the future.

Fascinating

This is our third visit and we always see something new each time. This time our family group discussed the 1981 Springboks Tour and we did not agree with the Museum's assessment. The Halt All Racist Tours definitely won that battle. But it is great to see this and other contentious and not so contentious matters on display and keeping our law and order history alive.

Small but worth it.

Took a day trip out to Porirua on the train from Wellington Central. If you don't fancy the walk grab a taxi, but we walked, about 3km and once you are past the motorway it's lovely! The staff were lovely, gave us a little introduction to the museum and left us to it. As two adults there was plenty of interesting stuff to keep us occupied for at least an hour. For kids there are lots of games and interactive areas such as where they can try on uniforms, learn about their fingerprints and play a detective game throughout. Lots of individual areas dedicated to specific well known incidences like the bombing of the Rainbow Warrior, and the Aramoana murders. Would definitely recommend going along.
