It’s a deception. The castle does not exist, ruined and there is a Greek church on top of it. Worth visiting only for the sunset view.

Fun hike up to this spot. Make sure you have decent shoes with a grip on sand. Amazing vistas of the town, ocean and Island. A must for photographers

Better moment of course to go there during sunset, for the view and the heat. View is great of course but the castle nothing special

If you are in Plaka for the day - dining or shopping, this hike is worth the effort. On the way up, stop at one of the churches and ring the bell; keep climbing all the way to the top. If you want photos, it's probably best to avoid sunset; that's when a hundred or so people will climb up to watch the sun go down. The rest of the day it's pretty uninhabited; a few dwellings on the way up but most of the churches are abandoned. The "Castle", if you'd call it that, is a church at the top of the hill. It was locked the two times we visited, but I would imagine for special occasions like Easter they might open it up.

Above the village of Plaka is a lava dome with very few ruins, mainly stone walls of not the best quality, which is called 'Kastro'. Sometimes in guidebooks it is mentioned as 'Venetian Castle', in which case it would refer to the period 1204 to 1566, when the Venetian Dukes of Naxos ruled the island. Unfortunately not much is known about this place and whatever is left of the castle there is no reason to go up here for it. The only reason for a visit are the great views, especially also at sunset. On the way up one will go past the Panagia Thalassitra church, which is closed most of the time. Further up is a concrete area for collecting rain water and the chapel Mesa Panagia.
