Most tourists think Lumpini Park is as green as Bangkok gets, but hidden across the Chao Phraya River is the almost-island of Bang Krachao, known as the "green lungs" of the city. A 10-minute boat trip from Khlong Toey Port, it’s a vast area of unspoiled mangroves and orchards with little in the way of infrastructure. Many biking tours will organize trips to the area or you can go it alone and rent a bike when you get there.

I went along in November 2016. Not technically in Bangkok as such but also known as the green lungs of Bangkok. I rented a cycle near the Bang Krachao Pier for 50 baht and went exploring. I rode around the island for a few hours...More

We had no idea that this wonderful oasis existed until we went on a half-day cycling tour! Next time we are in Bangkok, we won't hesitate to take a boat over to the island, rent bicycles and explore at leisure. You could easily spend a...More

If you are fed up with the bustle of Bangkok, it is recommended you go here for a change. Bicycle rides for exercise. Nothing is special, but a place where the beauty of nature can be enjoyed!! BUT HURRY UP, before the 'Oasis' turns massacre!!...More

The island is easy to get to. I took the MRT to Klong Toei, went out Exit 2, so I was on the correct side of the street. Took a moto taxi to the pier for 40 baht. It was 10 baht to use the...More

Open google map in satellite view, and look for a huge green area : that's it, you found bangkok green lungs. Take a taxi to Bang na pier, and then the 10 baht ferry to cross the river and here you are, no more heavy...More

As mentioned, a lovely green countryside escape from the city within the city. You could prepare by taking a lunch (we had sandwiches) and bottled water (dissolving some rehydration tablets/powder in the water might help as on a very hot day, particularly when cycling). Sky...More

Bang Krachao is no longer the "hidden gem" escape it once was, but it is still a very nice respite from the noise, pollution and hassles of Bangkok. Unless you're really intent on visiting the weekend market (I wasn't impressed), I strongly recommend that you...More

Questions & AnswersAsk a question
This might be a future destination and I have a few questions about the place. I've seen maps that suggest a fixed trail that goes in a loop. If so how long does the loop take? If you don't take the trail I guess you can go wherever you want to and there are many smaller trails? Is it easy to get lost on these trails? Is the Botanical gardens worth the time? Also seeing some of the pictures, some of those trails look quite dangerous. Can imagine being on a trail and coming to something that I don't feel comfortable with. Thanks.

A loop without any stop (when you ride like professional cyclists) takes about one hour. But I highly recommend stopping at attractions along the way e.g.the floating market, the botanical gardens. This would take you about... More

I can't find Bang Krachao on Google Maps. Reviewers keep saying it's within Bangkok but the only result showing up on Google Maps is way outside of Bangkok. Could anyone please share an accurate location? Thanks

It is most of that area engulfed by the river. Check Google maps with the satellite view and it is really obvious due to being completely green!
