This temple of Tara Devi ( a form of Goddess Durga ) is situated at an altitude. While this at level with Shimla in terms of height ; the best time to visit is on Sundays when there is Langar / Bhandara. This place has a series of steps and climb and once at the top there is so much space all around ; surrounded by nature. A new temple has opened , made all in wood and the architecture is influenced by tibetian and buddhist cultures. In my last visit the new temple was being constructed and this time it was all completed. There is daily aarti at 6pm during winters and 7pm during summers. One can see beautiful himalayan birds all around.

There are strict covid protocols being followed here. It is great during winters but it gets below zero soon by 5pm in the evening so so wear enough warm clothes.
The priest had a near death experience and he was recollecting the power of God and the belief and faith in the supreme power during our visit.

The temple has Tara Devi with Kali on the left and Goddess Saraswati on the right. It is beautiful and bright and there is ample space with carpets to sit down, relax, meditate, pray.

In all other months apart from December ; once can do trekking all the way down from the mountain top where the temple is located to the road level. I did this trek in my previous visit and it takes approximately an hour depending on the pace of walking.

Tara devi temple is some 10 kms before shimla city. The temple is located on the top of the hill. 6 kms uphill drive from the main highway. The view from the hilltop is very beautiful. This is ancient devi temple. One feels very peaceful inside the temple premises. Temple premises and the architecture is very beautiful.

Tara Devi temple is at a distance of around 15 kilometres from Shimla and when coming from Shimla side, a road cuts sharply towards the rear left side at an angle of 30 degrees with steep slopes near Shoghi. The road is very steep, very narrow but is metalled. Sufficient parking is available at the shrine.
This is a beautiful temple and has been extraordinarily maintained. Since situated on a hilltop, the views are good, but beware of monkeys. Leather items are not permitted inside. A bhandara is held here on Sundays and holidays.
worth visit.

Your visit to Shimla is incomplete if you don't visit this temple. Entire surrounding is heavenly. We performed puja & went around the temple. Also, you can pledge your wish to the Goddess & get prashad from Panditji.

If you want to go on a day trek, taradevi is the place in shimla for that. take shimla-kalka toy train from shimla and get down at Taradevi station (3rd stop). from Taradevi station, follow the trekking trail to the mandir.

The trekking trail traverse through ranges of Himalayan mountains with spectacular view of the slopes and the clouds descending through them. Stop by at certain locations to rejuvenate with fresh rain water that seeps through the rocks. The trekking trail is completely safe for family or couples.

You can take the same trail to return to the Taradevi station, or take a taxi from the road side to reach Shimla.

This is one of Shimla’s most-visited religious attractions. Situated at a distance of around 15 kilometres (around 45 minutes drive from Shimla railway station) from the city, the best way to hop across to the temple is via the Kalka-Shimla National Highway.
The Tara Devi Temple is perched atop a hill at a height of 1,851 metres above sea level. It is surrounded by greenery, which gives the place a serene and peaceful vibe.
The stunning backdrop of the Himalayas coupled with clean air makes it worth the trip.
It is a 250-year-old temple of Maa Bhagwati Tara Devi - a form of Goddess Durga.

Timings:
All days of the week

Just visited the temple complex yesterday, only to find out that the main temple sanctum has been closed for renovation. The idols have been shifted to a make shift room close to the temple. Here's hoping that the new structure is not something ugly and modern. And it manages to retain the old world charm we all associate this temple with. The project is expected to be completed in two and a half years atleast.

Firstly the main picture on this page is not of Tara Devi temple. Looks like some other Buddhist temple in HP. The temple is a located on a hill top. the views from the temple are mesmerizing. I must warn you that from where you park the car, There is along steep walk and about 200 hundred stairs. So if you have disabled and young children with you, please be careful. The place is generally very pleasant and windy. Keep woolens handy. There is a newly constructed Shiv temple a little behind the main temple. Do visit that when you are there. It is a must visit atleast once in your lifetime. The energy of the temple is rejuvenating.
