We have been to this amazing lake a few times now, we love the amazing scenery of these thousands of flowers which makes great photos.
I am not a morning person and this trip requires an early start as the photos are best at sunrise but the awesome views make it worthwhile. Another reason to get up early is that the flowers close up when the heat of the day kicks in.
Locals have told us that it is a myth that the flowers only open during the short winter season, they say the flowers are there all year just a bit less outside the peak season.
Last time we enjoyed the annual trip more by staying a couple of days at a newly opened accommodation, Bua Daeng Homestay, which is very close to the lake. Very handy so you don't have to get up in the middle of the night with only a couple of minutes to drive from the accommodation to the lake.

We visited the Red Lotus Lake, which is about 40-45 mins drive from Udon Thani city centre, in January 2020. There are a few area to take the boat ride, and we think the old jetty is better location as there’s less crowd and the water lilies are pretty close to the shore. Try to arrive before sunrise and you will get to enjoy the amazing sunrise with lots of pink water lilies. Small boat cost THB300 for an hour (for two people). Beautiful place to visit while in Northeast Thailand during winter months (Dec-Feb)

It is a must when you at Udon Thani. This lotus lake is from December to February only. If you are not driving on your own, you can book a half day trip from your hotel. Just in case you hotel do not have the contact and this service, you can book from Udonbackparkers Beds and Cafe (see photo for their FB messenger). The price I pay for 1 person is THB599 and it is including the boat. The boat is bigger plastic type, not the wooden smaller type. The journey from Udon Thani town to the lake is about 1 hour and it must be in the morning.

Better come here so early morning and stay here for the beautiful scenery for around 1.30-2 hrs. Recommend to rent leng tail boat with 150 baht fee per person. One long tail boat can carry 2 person excluded the boat driver. This place can visit during November till aroung February in each year. Lots of pink lotus in the lake waiting for your memory shutter. No drone service for the top-down photo, but recommend you can take by your own. The boat driver can help take you the photo and give them some tip for remuneration.

we made a one day outing from Udon Thani, first to the beautiful Red Lotus Sea, then from here to the (rather disappointing) UNESCO World Heritage site at the Ban Chiang Museum. The Red Lotus Sea definitely saved our day. A one hour boat ride (300 B) all accross and along the lake, with dozens or rather hundreds of birds and millions of water lillies (not lotus), just beautiful. the best time is early morning, not later than 11 AM.

Boat trip on a lake almost covered by red lotus flowers and a very few whites. Located not far outside Udon Thani. The area is quite big, the lake with a few small islands, one with cows. Many birds. Quite nice for a couple of hours

I went here today early around 6.50 am. If you can go for the sunrise it would be awesome I think we just missed it. We took the boat for 2 people 150 per person. The driver helped with some nice photos. This is one of those places in the world that photos don't do justice. It's absolutely beautiful and a must do if in Udon Thani or nearby. November to February is the season to go.

On the Red Lotus Lake in Udon Thani, one can go a relaxing, short safari, 'boat on the river' ride, to check out a curious blend of flora and fauna, And the experience is very much, up close and personal, which is great. Additionally there is a nice little mix of cafes and street hawker style shops, close to the water, plus an interesting rainbow coloured jetty, also worth a look. All in all, it really is the proverbial 'hidden gem' (check out my YouTube Vlog), in my opinion. And, one of any in the eternally surprising Isaan (Northeastern) region of Thailand. I will be back.

If you want to come this place. Perfect time is in early morning (6.00 - 8.00 am). Small boat is good choice for photographer. It can slow rowing boat near Lotus. Highly recommend.
