- Alexandra G77 contributionsIt's beautiful, but... You went to bed at nightfall at 10:00. There are many beaches where it is difficult to swim because no depth. There is nothing authentic: only springs are installed on this island with their restaurant that have aligned with Awards far too expensive for what it is, but you have no choice, you are stuckVisited July 2024Traveled with familyWritten July 25, 2024
- Carina NRegensburg, Germany268 contributionsWere on Kecil at Longbeach. One wooden cabin next to another and a tractor drives up and down the beach every day with luggage. The water and sand are fantastic. Cell phone reception and food very good. Accommodation expensive and modest quality. When we were here it had 15-30knot wind from the 3rd day with extremely high waves and the drive to Besut was more than dangerous and wet. The monkey gang here on the way to Coral Bay is aggressive and trying to attack.Visited March 2025Traveled with familyWritten March 19, 2025
- ailaeSwitzerland11 contributionsActually I would recommend a visit on Perhentiam Islands. It is calm and the water is turquoise blue - seems to be perfect. If you want to do scuba diving or snorkeling, it is a good destination. What made me sad was the state of the coral reefs and the water quality. There were so many dead corals and there was a lot of plastic in the water. On the island, were several construction sites - a sign that the tourism seems to be expanding. And after I have seen that they let all the excremrnts from the big hotels dorectl, into the bay (in the afternoon, when tourists were out in the water), I didn't go for another swim there. Conclusion: worth a visit but the people should have to respect and protect nature so that this place will stay great.Visited April 2024Traveled with friendsWritten April 13, 2024

- robertobaroncelliSesto Fiorentino, Italy2,023 contributionsA paradise... That's what these islands are. Despite some reviews writing that August are full this does not correspond to reality. Far from mass tourism, not difficult to reach but not easy either; they are a quiet destination with an incredible sea. Cheap prices (also in July and August). - Candice MMacon, France15 contributionsTo reach the airport to the pier to take the boat to the Pernanthians, here's the good plan! We made it this week and it was perfect. Either by contacting via whatzapp this n (+60179546033 (Aliaa) who will be able to find you the car that suits the number of travelers you are; or directly with this driver +60199993071 (mr zukie) who can take 4 people max. Less than an hour you are at the pier. Simple and efficient :)Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 25, 2024

We were a bit busier longbeach, but busy is certainly not crowded here. Big difference in the range of resorts. We knew that it is not the perfect time if the year as season is only starting in February but we expected a little bit more.
Arriving at the jetty with a pre-booked ticket we found out that there is not "The one" ferry with its schedule but every ticket company has its own boats and tries to get them full.
Therefore, we were leaving 40min. later than scheduled (after complaining) and had a terrible crossing in high waves. IMPORTANT ADVICE: try to get to the islands early in the morning as it gets more and more windy throughout the day. We felt safe due to a good boatsman but some passengers were frightened as the boat jumped high and than landed hard on the next wave, making us and the luggage wet and salty .It took us 1 hour to get there and 20min. more to reach our stop ( they drop you on your hotel/ chalet/ glamping, just have to inform them).
Although our place charged as much as a 4* Berjaya,Langkawi hotel it was lacking the comfort.
We knew it is rather basic but this includes that beaches are full of stones, shells and glass / rubbish from the sea. At high tide the beaches are reduced by 2/3 in width. The water has jellyfish and there were no protected areas. A café we visited for lunch had nothing available from their menu except rice and nuddles- no water, no sodas, no sandwich.
Maybe we have been at too many great places and maybe due to my age (57) I do not see anymore the romantic side of it, but we really regretted having booked 4 days here as there is not much to do and the sun is very aggressive once it is out.
Besides, locals are very ignorant, no awareness for the plastic straws litter they produce and most of them speak poor English.

The Perhentians have been popular with tourists for many years and for good reason. An enjoyable island(s) experience awaits all who visit. There is plenty of information on the internet relating to transport, accommodations and locations. Some additional information follows.
Keep in mind when planning your visit that many services are not available during the monsoon season ie October to March inclusive.
There are no ATMs so make sure your cashed up before you arrive.
Meals are more expensive than what you will find on the mainland as everything has to be brought in by boat.
If you smoke bring your own cigs. My cigs are MYR15.40 - 15.90 on the mainland. The souvenir shop at Suhaila Palace on Perhentian Besar charged me MYR25 a pack.
Trails on both islands are badly in need of maintenance and have poor signage.
Taxi boats to various locations between and around the two islands have set fees for 1 person but the catch is minimum 2 persons thereby making it more expensive for solo travelers.
One annoyance is the lack of connecting transport at Merang jetty. The first public boat departure is at 9am. The only bus going from Merang jetty to Mersing daily departs at 9.30am. Not exactly user friendly public transport. I had to pay MYR500 for a private boat to be able to connect with the 9.30am bus.

1. Hey travelers, Perhentian Island located at Kuala Besut, Besut District, Terengganu.
2. Perhentian Islands had two main islands and we called Perhentian Kecil (located Long Beach) and Perhentian Besar.
3. How about the transportation ? You come with a bus, taxi, ehalling or personal vehicle. How to get that ? You can come from Kuala Terengganu or Kota Bharu by express bus.
4. You can go to the express bus kiosk at the bus station (Terminal Bus Kuala Terengganu/ Kota Bharu) and ask the price and the bus will pass through Kuala Besut.
5. Some travelers like to go to Redang Island,Bidong Island or Lang Tengah Island (later I will share my experience).
6. After you reach Kuala Besut by bus, the bus will stop at Kuala Besut Station Bus (Town Kuala Besut). Or if you come with our vehicle (motorcycle or car) make sure to find parking (fee around RM 10.00 for car and motorcycle RM2.00 but if safe).
7. If you are walking in to come here, please don't walk in on the weekend (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) due to being so busy and crowded with tourists.
8. How much is the package Perhentian Island? Around RM 50 - 60 for a day trip and accommodation please use Booking.com, Trivago and so on. How much are you going to spend on accommodations? It depends on you but I suggest staying at Long Beach (crowded with travelers but you can do many things). If you want to relax, cool and private you can try at Perhentian Besar.
9. I just advised that mode of transport at Perhentian was boat or ferry and the cost was “pretty good’’. Please stay at Perhentian Kecil okay.
10. What to eat at Perhentian ? I suggest bringing some food on the island because the price is not bad. Expect , you must try BBQ with fresh seafood.
Thank you, any question and please comment below.

The island is quite hard to get to. I went there to get scuba certified. The accommodations available are quite rustic and basic. Very limited food options overall and low value for price.
There are few fire shows and some barbecue station. Would not recommend staying for more than 2 days. I followed youtubers and ig recommendations. All the drone shots make it look like paradise but only few corners look like it.

Spent a few blissful nights on Perhentian Besar island. Caught water taxis to various beaches on both Besar and Kecil islands and also hired a private boat for a snorkelling tour (just my family) including a visit to the beautiful Rawa Island beach. Accommodation/cafes on both Perhentian islands slowly opening up after Covid but still quiet which was great. Flew into Kota Bahru - caught a taxi to Kuala Besut (50 mins) and then onto a boat for the crossing (50 minutes). Crossing can be a bit rough, life jackets provided.

The water was crystal clear and sooo blue and beautiful. We snorkelled twice - saw many reef sharks, 4 Napoleon fish (ugly but amazing), 2 large turtles (about 1m long), thousands of tropical fish, some pretty coral. Was amazing. Take your mosquito repellent with you as plenty of mozzies. Approx a fun filled 30-40 mn “ferry” ride from Kuala Beset. Highly recommend you go there.

Visited Perhentian in end of October, just before the rainy season. Weather was still great, sunny and warm (+30 deg C). Boat trip from mainland took ab. 45 min with small speedboat.
PIR beach is private and perhaps the best in island. There are great snorkeling and diving areas. About 100m from the beach there is an area to spot turtles almost 1005 guarantee every day.
In the end of tourist season the resort was peaceful. Everything except the kitchen worked fine. Normal weekly buffet dinner and barbecue were not available any more.
Another 'minus' is wifi, that worked only in the lobby area.

When you arrive at Khota Baru airport, don't look after any Uber driver because there are none.
When you are going out of the airport, you have minibuses (white and green) which go to Perhentians but the seats are reserved for passengers who have a trip offered by their hotel. So, if it's the case, look after the right mini van. Otherwise, make a right and take a taxi. It will cost 78RM (16€) to get to Kuala Besut. About an hour drive. Consequently, it's not a bad idea to go to the toilet before starting. There is a bus going to the islands 10RM/person but the taxi driver will charge you 30 RM for the 10 minute drive to the bus stop. Since you don't know when the bus (10RM/person) is going to leave and how many stops it will make on the way, I think, taking the taxi directly from the airport is the best choice.
If you are just the 2 of you, you could look after another couple going to Kuala Besut because I suppose we all have the same destination. In so doing, both will get a 50% discount since you will share the fare!
Note that they accept only 4 people in it. In our case, we were 5, so we had to take 2 taxis. = 2 x 78 = 156 RM.
When you arrive at Kuala Besut next to the Perhentians, the taxi driver will stop you in front of an office where you will purchase your boat tickets to reach your island (Keci or Besar). It's not expansive but if you don't want to be the foolish tourist, note that you can find a better tariff if you are consulting other offices nearby (there are some and easy to find).
I think, each office has its own boat. Our office said that they have 4 departure hours (2 pm, 3:30 pm, 4:30 pm and 6 pm) and I was afraid to miss the departure time since it was 1:50 pm but we left at 2:25. Actually, they wait untill they have enough clients to depart.
This same office proposed us to use a private mini van for the way back. It was 150 RM instead of 156 (the 2 taxis in our case). Waow, the big saving but we took it. We didn't have the time to check all the prices because our boat where about to leave in a few minutes (we thought).
For the way back to the airport, wait untill you are going off the boat to choose the best price for your taxi since there is a lot of competition there. Which is not the case at the airport.
I have seen prices like 20RM per person. So, for us it would have been 100 RM...
For the boat trip, since we were the 5 of us, I have asked and obtained a discount which was indeed possible since their price was at the highest. Round trip, it was 65RM instead of 70. Very important, give the date and hour for the way back.
If you have to eat at this harbour, it's not easy to find a decent place. I'm going to give you directions to go to a decent one. When you are going off the boat, you walk straight a little minute down an alley. You arrive then at a street, don't go in the second alley but go on the right (15 meters), then make a left = 50m away on your right, you'll find something decent restaurant, with a lot of dishes to choose from.
Even if written, don't expect a wifi connection...
When you take the boat, there are 2 possibilities. The first one is to wait until the boat drops you off at your hotel. It might take some time because it stops at differents places. The nice part is that you can look at places where you could come back later. The down side of it is that you are loosing time. The second possibility is to give the driver a tip to drop you off first. I didn't propose it to him but I'm sure he wouldn't have refused.
We have stayed 3 nights at Ombok resort on the West oast of Keci, at CORAL BAY to be precise. It's a quiet beach but with many taxi boats on the shore. I wouldn't speak about a dream beach but it's not a big problem since you can hire a boat which will bring you where you want for a small fee.
On our last day, we only had 3 hours ahead of us because we had to take the boat to Kuala Besut at noon. Normally, most boat taxis start their day at 10 AM but since we were the 5 of us and knowing that you have to pay per person, we have been able to start earlier and enjoy some snorkeling points nearby. The taxi brings you to 3 different places where you can stay 3 hours in total.
I have asked a local which was the best place for snorkeling and he replied by RAWA islands which are North West of Keci. Visit also Tonkong and Serenggen which are nearby. This snorkeling point was also strongly recommended in my traveller book. It's only a lack of time which made me choose other snorkeling points. The boat will wait for you untill you want to go to the next place. If you are a little group, you could negociate that he brings you to a 4th site like light house which seems to be a nice snorkeling place too. It costs 50 RM/person for 3 hours = 10€/person.
Masks and scubas are provided. Fins cost 10 RM.
If you don't take the boat and want to rent mask and scuba (10RM : 2€) and the same for the fins.
If you intend to snorkel for several days or intend to do some more in the future, I advise you to buy your equipment in Kuala Lumpur for instance (about 90RM for the 3 objects : 18€)
For our snorkeling, we went to Shark point were we have indeed seen some sharks. We have been to Coral bay where we saw a lot of Corals and nice fishes. And finally we went to turtle bay were we saw 2 big turtles. Cost = 30RM/person = 6€/pers for 3 hours.
There is another option. A 5 hour snorkeling tour for 40RM/person (8€). You will see the 3 spots mentionned before + 2 other ones (romantic beach and another one) and a stop at the only village with locals to eat (not included) at the South of Keci island.
Scuba Diving
I advise you to consider to pass there your Padi certificate (open water) because you have all the conditions with you : water at 30°, clear water and a lot to see. You have 5 dives with an instructor. Than, you have to watch a long video or you read carefully a given book. This can be done over 3 days. We have done it in 2 days because we only had 2 days. Consider that it will cost you about 200€ per person. But once your certificate obtained, you will be able to do fun dives for 15 to 20€/person. That means that you will dive with the whole equipment, the boat will bring you to the place you wanted and with the assistance of an instructor if you want. Consider it as an investment. Just like when you have to pay for your driving licence.
It's a great experience and that's great to share this moment with your family. I did it with my 3 kids (22/20/16) and I know it's something they will never forget. For our future destinations, we will look after places where it's possible to dive. We did it with Ombak dive which has nothing to do with Ombak resort even if next to it. I suppose that many clubs do a good job but this one deserves a 5/5!
Ombak resort
By walking on Coral beach, I can say that Ombak resort has the one of the nicest places to eat (nice terrace). Be patient because they are pretty slow to serve you. But note that at 7 pm they will show a recent film on a large screen. When it's done, they will show another one just after. They have a board with the 2 movies shown this evening. If you are insterested by one of them, that's fine but if you just want to eat and talk, this loud movie will bother you.
If you are staying at Coral beach, I advise you to eat at Ewan's which is just behind Ombak resort on the road leading to Long beach. Very good prices, quiet and good food. It's just the decoration which isn't so good. Depends on your priorities...They even have some board games.
Another place to eat is Shabi resort at 50 m away from Ombak resort. Not the best quality but an excellent ratio/price for this buffet since it's 4€/person!
On the contrary, women at thje reception were great at Ombak resort. They do all their best to change you of room if you kindly ask for it. If you are looking for air conditioning, they will try to satisfy you. If you stay there, they say that they have the wifi, which is correct, but it's so slow that you have to consider that they don't have as most places on the islands I guess.
If you have found this note usefull, that would be nice to reward me with one 'useful vote'

I had to do a lot of research on how to get to the Perhentian Islands, now that I am back I would recommend anyone to go there it is so beuatiful and tropical. Please find below some useful information to help you on your way.
By Flight:
Fly with Malaysia Airline, Air Asia or Fireflyz from Kuala Lumpur to either Kuala Terengganu or Kota Bharu (45minutes). After you arrive at the airport, take either a bus or taxi to Kuala Besut jetty. The journey will take about 1½ hours from Kuala Terengganu airport / 1hours from Kota Bharu airport.
Getting in from Kota Bharu:
There is a direct local bus service (City Liner) (RM 6, 1.5h). It's also easy to arrange a shared taxi ride RM70.00- virtually any guesthouse or hotel in Kota Bharu will organise this. You can also book the mini van from Kota Bharu to Kuala Besut . You are required to make reservation in advance especially during May- September. The fare is RM35.00 per pax.
Know Before You Go:
• You’ll pay a 5 RM National Park fee before reaching the islands, when you book your boat ticket in Kuala Besut.
• Wifi can be slow and patchy on the islands. This can actually be a blessing. Plan for a few technology-free days and make the most of your surroundings.
• Bring supplies with you from the mainland. Drinks, snacks and toiletries are for sale in small shops on the beach and in the local village on Kecil but prices are high and selection is limited.
• Most of the locals on the islands are Muslim. You’ll only find alcohol for sale at selected resorts. Bring your own from the mainland or, even better, bring it across the border from Thailand.
• Beware of sea lice bites! These miscroscopic jellyfish larvae can be present in the water if you’re on the islands in shoulder season. They feel like little stings or electric shocks while you’re in the water and can leave a nasty rash. Take some antihistamines (oral and topical) and be sure to wash and dry your swimsuit if you do get bitten.
Place to stay before getting boat transfer in Besut jetty
T’Lodge - No. 1A, Perkedaian 2. Tingkat "Merpati", Stesen Bas Kuala Besut, Jalan Besar, Kuala Besut, Besut, Malaysia 22300 there are other places to stay and may be cheaper but T’Lodge is where I stayed for one night and I do recommend it.
How To Get To The Islands:
Journey to the islands takes about 30 to 45 minutes by speed boat and one and half hours by slow boat. There are a number of boat operators in Kuala Besut offering boat services to Perhentian Island. The return boat ticket cost RM 60.00 per person for speed boat and RM40.00 per person for slow boat.
Places to stay on the islands:
Kecil - Chalet at The World Café (outside shower) very expensive
Shari-la Island Resort (fridge, decent bathroom, lots of wood affect)
Bubu long beach (sister of chalet at the world café)
Besar - Tuna Bay Island Resort Mainland Office
Abdul's Chalet (big rooms, bright bathroom)
Coral View Island Resort (Clean rooms, lots of wood affect)
There are many other places to stay on both islands, i turned up on Kecil Island and looked around for a place to stay that i liked.
Places to eat – Ewans Café - free wifi (Coral Bay) Re, Blue and Yellow café isn’t great but it’s cheap (Long beach) Panorama does nice food and they play a movie in the evenings good place to hang out
Getting out – Kuala Besut - Kota Bharu
Shared taxi depart at 9am, 1pm and 5pm. Cityliner buses to the city center of Kota Bharu leave at 7:30am, 9am, 10am, 11am, 12:30am, 2pm, 3pm, 4pm, 5:30pm and at 6:30pm (RM 6 per person, takes about 90 mins. depending on traffic). You reach the bus station, when you head right from the jetty, across the little square at the public restrooms, go left after the "tour office", then enter the small street to the right and at the end you will find the red and yellow painted bus stop.
please message me through Tripadvisor if you would like any more information.

I visited these islands first time in 2008. They were pristine, little hidden paradises surrounded by jungle and a deep clear emerald water full of fishes sharks turtles and the most amazing coral I have ever seen.
Well, the paradise is gone. Even Besar, which is supposed to be the more quiet and preserved island, is now built and over built, there is not an inch of the shore without concrete blocks or wooden chalets. It is sad that some resorts even took over the beach, or the jungle to build.
In July / August specialy on the week end there is just too many people and the prices are ridiculously high for Malaysia. We could camp on Kapas Island for 15RM a night or have a wonderful huge room for 80RM. Here the cheapest we could find was 100Rm - and we were really lucky.
However, even if most of the coral is sadly white by now, the area is still the most beautiful snorkeling and dives of the country and probably of SE Asia.
Few tips...
First, go to Besar.
Kecil, behind it's "backpacker and guest houses" image, is crowded, a LOT dirtier, and NOT cheaper. Other difference is that in Kecil you have loads of karaoke bars and loud reggae bars until late so good luck for sleeping - plus you have chance to get your bag stolen on the beach. Which is not happening in lovely quiet fun Besar - where every one knows everyone.
To get there from Kota Baru : bus 639 (every hour starting 8AM until4PM) to Kuala Besut jetty. On the way back, Kuala besut afternoon departures are 4PM, 5.30PM and 6PM. Which is enough since the last boat from the islands is at 4PM anyway.
To get there from KL or Penang : there are flights to Kota Baru but also direct buses that go from those two cities directly to kuala besut jetty. From anywhere else you should reach Kota baru first. A cab ride from KBaru to the jetty is 60RM in high season, 45RM low season.
Every resort will try to push you to get round trip boat transfer with them for 70RM. Avoid it and get your ticket at the jetty in Besut in one of the many travel agencies, for 50RM (they drop you off wherever you want). There will always be boats, even in low season so no need to book in advance or over pay
BEST RESTAURANTS IN BESAR : Belinda Restaurant (Pat Thai, green curry, juices, French toast with kaya- homemade coconut jam... All delicious and not too pricy) for breakfast and lunch. I couldn't find a tripadvisor page for them though. And Mama's restaurant for the dinner barbecue (try the squid, it's beyond words).
Tuna Cafe's chicken satay is legendary (plus they have wine!)
BEST PLACEs TO STAY : I would say Mamma's chalet. We payed 100RM on week-end in July for a super clean, big fan chalet with clean bathroom inside and terrace outside. The prices around can be double or triple for the exact same thing... Plus here the owners are adorable and super helpful.
No web reservation, you have to call.
+019 985 3359 (at the hotel)
+60 13 940 0232 (at the jetty)
Otherwise the Tuna Bay, one of the first resorts of Besar - modern, AC, triple rooms, hot showers, super nice beach, book through their website or by phone it will be way cheaper than on booking or Agoda. Cheapest room is Garden view, 300RM in high season (breakfast included)
BEST SNORKELING GUIDE BY FAR : his name is Sabri and he is from the islands. Swims like a dolphin and kindest man in the earth. I met him in 2008 when I first came in the islands and just went for more trips with him. He will always find a way to escape the crowds (quite a job specially in high season if you don't want to snorkel along with 200 people). He will make sure everyone is okay. He will know where exactly to swim to see the beautiful corals, where the baby sharks hang out, and the name of every fish met on the way. He will go swim with you, while all the tours at the hotels will drop you in several point and wait until you're done. Sabri is a real guide, it's like going on a guided trek but underwater...
Reachable at the following number : +60 19 963 5624. Specially recommended with kids, or people afraid of diving in deep sea or with sharks... Or if you are an adventurer - in that case he will free dive with you also and you will never forget it.
Enjoy!

Buonasera vorrei gentilmente sapere se le isole Perhentian sono fornite di copertura telefonica o Internet grazie

Salve a tutti. Grazie in anticipo

Buongiorno.

Is the jetty/ boat transfer senior-citizen friendly? One with wheel chair?
Written July 5, 2019
this in my experience:
I have been only in boats with powerfull engine, driven by boatmen with no respect for the lumbar of passengers, who ride the waves despite passengers finally will be wet.
I dont know if they is any special boat for wheel chair,
but the question might be sent to some tour operator
sorry

I do agree that speed boats are very unconfortable,
but I dont remember if there are other boats.
The pier is at KUALA BESUT
if you can find there: TRAVEL & TOURS on the internet,
you can apply for the transfer

e sono stato in due alberghi, su due spiagge diverse:
- Arwana, in una spiaggia fognosa, dove non tornerei
- The Barat Perhentian resort, dove invece tornerei volentieri,
cottage piccoli, ma buon ristorante.
con varie opzioni nei dintorni
non sono stato a Redang, ma sono arrivato da kuala besut
