About
It is the deepest canyon in Europe, and second deepest in the world after the Grand Canyon of Colorado, USA. 78km long, and up to 1.300m deep, this "tear of Europe", as it is also called, is a great natural and tourist attraction not only in the area, but in the entire country.

Last year I had a rest in Montenegro. I had heard before a lot of good reviews about Montenegro rafting and I decided to buy a ticket.

The price was 60 euros per person. The road took four hours to the one side and down the river took three hours. On the way there a driver did several stoppings and it allowed to see many lakes, rivers and mountains. In a gathering spot I had breakfast before rafting and lunch after. The rafting was amazing, the views were a miracle and emotions were crazy. During that trip we had two pit stops and ten times river waves covered us.

If you have a vacation in Montenegro, you certainly need to take this tour. I give 9 out of 10, because the price is high.

We love this place very much. Every year we go several times by ourselves and take friends. Not incredible beauty, just can't put it into words! We recommend to everyone!

Дуже любимо це місце. Кожного року по декілька разів їздимо самі і возимо друзів. Не неймовірна краса, просто не передати словами! Всім рекомендуємо!

One of my favourite rivers ever. Really pretty. Great fun to zipline over. Lovely canyon walls. Nicely coloured water in places, runs at a good speed. Plenty of fun things to do.

just take rent a car + map and go. but start really early in the morning - MNE kilometers are twice longer than usual (not joking - roads are hard to drive, so u will go slow).

best way is to go from podgoritsa TO tara, not from tara to podgoritsa - U will be driving closer to canyon and have greater views. after tara bridge (dont eat at tara bridge - bad tourist food) its good to go to Jabliak (Zabliak) and stay there in cold air (its 22-23 degrees when its 35-40 at the sea), have a 1-2 hours walk around Black Lake. If U are experienced driver - U can get to seashore same day (not less then 3 hours to Budva from Jabliak through Risan (there's new good road) or stay for night in Jabliak and get back next day.

if U didn't drive along Tara Canyon (through Durmitor national park) - U did not see Montenegro. Believe me, it's really one of the most beautiful roads in the world.

PS
Please, take care - roads dont have straight parts at all. So, plan your trip with plenty of extra time to take make stops to rest and remember, that narrow mountain roads dont like relaxed drivers. Also, be careful of speed limits - there are many policemen with radars controlling speed. And keep headlights on - its loval rule (breaking it cost 20 euro).

On its 145 kilometer long flow form Komovi, Tara made an almost 100 kilometer long and 1.3 kilometer deep canyon. The Tara canyon is the second deepest in the world, just after the famous Colorado river in USA, but certainly, it is the most beautiful canyon in the world. Because of its pure drinkable water, opulent vegetation and wild life, with great number of endemic species, Tara canyon is under protection of UNESCO .
Tara, "the tear of Europe" on a rafting scale, takes place at 3-5 and is among the most attractive rivers on the planet. It is a true paradise for all adventurers. It is truly delightful and active vacation which offers you to enjoy in magnificence of rapids, clearings, water-mills, old churches and monastery’s and bridges. There are breathtaking natural phenomenons that you will see in tara canyon.

Surprisingly easy to travel along this impressive canyon. The good road follows the full length and gives you opportunity to see the top of the canyon and put your toes in the very cold water at the bottom.

The Tara River Canyon (Montenegrin: Кањон ријеке Таре / Kanjon rijeke Tare, pronounced [kǎɲɔːn târɛː]), also known as the Tara River Gorge, is a canyon on the Tara River in Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

It is 82 kilometers (51 miles) long and the last 36 kilometers constitute the border between Bosnia and Herzegovina,Serbia and Montenegro. The canyon at its deepest is around 1,300 meters (4,300 feet) deep. These parameters make the Tara River Canyon one of the deepest river canyons in Europe, and indeed the world.

The canyon stretch within Montenegro is protected as a part of Durmitor National Park and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Tara River cuts through the canyon.

The Tara River, at its end making confluence with the Piva, becomes the Drina, and is some hundred and fifty kilometers long[clarification needed]. In its passage through the Tara National Park, the river has a mean fall of 3.6 meters/kilometer, making a host of waterfalls and cascades possible, thus creating what is known as the Montenegrin Colorado.

All along its flow, the Tara gets large quantities of water from numerous tributaries. The most important tributaries on the left bank of the Tara are Ljutica and Susica, and the most important tributaries on the right bank are Vaskovaska Rijeka and Draga. The most important source is the source Bajlovica Sige, a source placed on the left bank of the Tara river, giving to the Tara a few hundred liters per second, where the water sourcing from the Bucevica cave falls into the Tara more than thirty metres high, and more than a hundred and fifty meters wide. Very special are the Tara cascades. The roar from the cascades is heard on the very peaks of the canyon. There are more than forty cascades, the most famous being Djavolje Lazi, Sokolovina, Bijeli Kamen, Gornji Tepacki Buk, Donji Tepacki Buk. Because of the quality of its water, and because of its unique ecological system, Tara in 1977 was put into the program “Covjek i biosfera” (Men and Biosphere) and inscribed into the ecological biosphere reservations of the World, being thus protected under an internationally issued convention.

There are rocky and pebbly terraces, sandy beaches, high cliffs, and more than 80 large caves along the canyon.

Here is a little guide to rafting Tara when based in Zabljak, according to our experiences from June 17:
typically your options will be a so called half day or full day rafting, both not fully deserving their names. Starting point will be always some kilometers upstream from Djurdjevica bridge. Operators will pick you up from your hotel or you meet them in the main square of Zabljak. Then they take you to the starting point, gear you up and off you go.
The so called half day is roughly 16 km long, includes the very cool Ljutica spring and a nice rapid but is generally easy to moderate. Time "on the water" including break at Ljutica was more like 1.20-1.30 than the 2-2.5 hrs which the operators are advertising.
We continued for the full day tour which is in terms of scenery absolutely worth it and extended the time on water to ~4 hrs in our case for the 45 km to exit point Radovan Luka including all breaks, as opposed to the 6 hrs advertised. Water is calm, only minor rapids, the "hardest" was already in the first part.
We went with operator "Daneraft". The owner was nice and helpful, the boat captain knew what he was doing but barely spoke some English.
Check for your options with the little tourist info in Zabljak main square. If you contact operators directly you might get some discount on what otherwise seems to be cartel prices of 45 / 110 Euros for half / full day trip.
It's an awesome landscape - if you made it this far, treat yourself to the full day tour!!!

From Zabljak it is approximately a 10min drive + 30min walk to the Curevac viewing point.

As we didn't find any road signs in Zabljak towards Curevac we had to ask directions to some locals. Once we got to the end of the road there were some parking spaces and bar. We had to pay a small entrance fee to the national park before we could start our walk to the viewing point (there is no paved path to the viewing point)

Once we got there the view was amazing and the walk was well worth it.
