The first of 3 vineyards we visited. Even though we had booked as we had a large group & I had confirmation of booking, we arrived to be told they don't do bookings & nothing was ready. We were told to go and find a table & eventually a staff member came out with glasses & then a bit later with the first wine. Was not very informative at all basically poured then went off to the Cellar to serve other people, waited about 10 to 15 minutes between tastings & nothing improved. We asked for water for between tastings she waved her hand that it was over there for us to get it ourselves.
Another group over from us had a different staff member who appeared to be more passionate about their wines. Unfortunately for BB one of our group is the wine buyer for a large hotel corporation that buys BB wines & she was unimpressed enough that she won't be continuing to buy from them. The general consensus of our group was arrogant, uninformative & uninterested. Fortunately the next 2 vineyards were amazing in contrast. Will not be recommending.

Tasting cost $5 here can be taken off a purchase ( one per purchase). Bit disappointing to find that after the cycle up the restaurant had stopped serving early as they were hosting an event. Nice shop on site.

Did the wine tasting @ $10 for 4 wines, but no choice of which wines, so we ended up with a fizz, a Rose, a Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Strange selection of wines given that Hawkes Bay is famous for its Chardonnay, Syrah, and Bordeaux blends. Option to pay extra $5 to taste another wine. Measly pours. Asked lots of questions but the people did not seem to know much about them, nor the qualities of the 2019 and 2020 vintage, just that they are easy to drink. Wines themselves were ok, Pinot Noir the best of the 4, but none compare to others in this area at similar prices. One of many vineyards we visited over 3 days, and certainly the least enjoyable. We were the only people there, and after we’d paid the server had the nerve to ask us to go back to our table and fetch our tasting glasses.
Also went to the Bistro which had been recommended to us by friends, and we really enjoyed some of the big reds with our meal, a much better experience.

Superb setting and nice staff. Tasting gave basic information and nothing more to bless you asked !

Tasting was 15 dollars per person and for that you tasted four wines all of which came from their entry level offerings.

Whilst all were well made at least one of the four should come from the more prestigious range that they produce.

Lovely setting as exoected. Helpful staff but miniscule tasters of wine so difficult to judge anything. No choice of 4 wines. $15 pp. Competitors charge $10 and serve 3 x as much per glass, you choose your wines and they give you a souvenir glass. So we shared which was ample as husband driving.

The customer service was really good; but the overall experience doesn’t compare to some of the other vineyards in the hawks bay. The wine was nice but nothing to write home about. The tasting seemed to be more on the pricer side than other vineyards in the area; especially considering when you’re purchasing wine. we have been in the past and it seemed like a let down compared to other visits.

Was looking forward to popping in here after touring the local area to grab some lunch and have a wine tasting. Sadly the bistro was shut. To be fair it seems like a lot of the cellar doors have shut their bistros/restaurants down with winter ands Covid so I’m not holding this against Black Barn. Might pay to check before going if you are looking for food.

The facilities are impressive and I can imagine on a nice day this place would be fantastic. We stayed for a wine tasting and it was very nice. The only thing I would say and again this maybe COVID related is we had to use the same glass for the 5 wines. No water provided to rinse the glass between tasting.

The wines were very nice however. The staff member was knowledgeable and very helpful.

Black Barn is a beautiful spot with a great wine cellar (tasting room), a lovely market shop, open air cinema in the summer, a lovely bistro and delicious wines. Highly recommend stopping in for a tasting or a meal.

The views, the fare, their wines, the excellent service - what’s not to love here at this gorgeous place? The Bistro filled up quickly after we were their first guests arriving for the evening, it seemed we were suddenly surrounded by a full house - the time passed so quickly!

I enjoyed a beautiful venison starter, after we all enjoyed some grainy lovely sourdough bread - as well as the local olives - addictive treats! My main was the fresh catch prepared with beautiful accoutrements of delectable veges - and I could not resist one scoop of their nutty yummy ice cream! A gorgeous meal!

Others had different choices, but all were content and happy with their meals. I think that this is the kind of place where you cannot go wrong with most anything you choose!

Can’t wait for another opportunity to come back!

We first went to their Saturday morning Growers Market held in a circle of trees in the vineyard - just fabulous. After our coffee, bacon & egg sarnie and almond croissant we did some shopping and then ambled up to the tasting room, located in front of the Bistro. Black Barn's Sauvignon Blanc is the first we have tasted they came across as a good Sauvignon Blanc - crisp and dry with no in your face grapefruit and citrus. So it can be done! Found the Rose to be a little astringent, but would work well with food. Our taster was just great and went out of his was to ensure we knew all about Black Barn and Havelock as well as showing us the Bistro - amazing views - its menu and wine list. Unlike most vineyard restaurants their wine list has a selection of Hawke's Bay wines. We were escorted from the cellar door to the Kitchen and given figs plucked straight from the trees that line the path. Probably the best figs I have ever tasted! Quite a morning! Recommended.
