About
Te Mata Estate is the oldest winery in New Zealand still operating. Our entire focus is fine wine production. There's no restaurant or accommodation here, only a small Cellar Door for tastings. Unlike other producers we are a working winery who undertake every winemaking step on site. Te Mata Coleraine and Bullnose have both been ranked in James Suckling’s ‘Top 50 Wines of the World’, and the winery has been awarded Robert Parker's highest classification 'Outstanding Producer, Five Stars'. Our tasting list covers all of our wines, but only six at a time. VIP tours are available with 24 hours notice. #1 on Decanter's List of 2019 wineries to visit worldwide.

We had such a lovely time tasting the 5 wines ($10 or free if purchasing) at te mata. Both staff were super friendly despite being incredibly busy with a very full tasting room. All the wines we tried were lovely. The grounds are also stunning, and I met Mr Buck Snr and the 3 most beautiful highland cattle (Adeline, Ella and Margeaux) in the adjacent paddock

Beautiful venue and wines to match.
We did the showcase tasting.
Attentive and knowledgeable Chris took us through a great tasting and explained all the wines well. Great thing to do if you are wanting to know more about the wines and their evolution.

We dropped in for a tasting 29th June.
We really enjoyed the explanation and story of the wines. The person that led the tasting was incredibly passionate. We cannot remember her name but this was a trip highlight.

Thank you

Enjoyed the tasting - relaxed and informative host - both unpretentious and welcoming.
Had a good natter, learned more about the wines and the vineyard and left. Good experience for $10 each.
Easy parking, toilets on site. Just nice.
Would recommend.

A local friend took us to several wineries for tasting and Te Mata was by far the best.
Great passionate people working there. The tasting experience was tremendous even though it was busy, to be expected on a Saturday.
We were able to try a couple of wines that weren't on the tasting menu that we ended up purchasing.
Thank you Te Mata.

Dropped by late on a Friday. Offered a tasting and were able to taste a few extra wines off the list.

The host was brilliant. She knew her wines and also quite a lot about wine making.

We only targeted a few vineyards and got exactly what we wanted at Te Mata.

Best Syrah tasting!! We didn’t get charged for the tasting but probably because we bought some Bullnose Syrah.

Probably best Syrah I had tasted in Hawke’s Bay.

Very nice wines and no reservation needed which was a plus for an impromptu trip. Well priced wines and tasting. Staff had a basic knowledge of the wines, but nothing much beyond what was provided on the information sheet. Would have been nice to know why the Awatea name/ship was chosen for one of the wines, and a bit of history about the company.

We had a great cellar door experience and were engaged by the host.
He had good knowledge of the area and wines in general.
We got to taste a good range (a few over and above the 'normal') and brought a fair few as well (I struggle to pay $75 untasted).
Well worth a visit.

Living near California's wine country, I've been to more wine tastings than I care to remember, but this one in the heart of New Zealand's north island wine country didn't stand out.

The property is nicely situated amidst the rolling green hills, and there are some colorful flower gardens in the parking lot. But once you get inside, the whole business is rushed and unfriendly, and you leave with as little knowledge as when you walked in.

There's no welcome, so sales speech, no tasting (we practically had to twist the lady's arm to get a thimble-full of $15 wine to share), and little grace to the whole experience. We'd recommend giving this one a miss!

We've been here before but now this time with kids. A quick taste of our favourites and bought several varieties. We like the place due to location and memories- the wine is also very good
