About
Birdwoods is a very special place in the heart of Hawke's Bay. Set in the countryside just 3km from Havelock North Village, and an easy attractive ride along the new cycle way direct to Birdwoods Gallery and its small companion, the Birdwoods Sweet Shop, which are a 'must see' for young and old. Three historic buildings have been relocated to this lovely rural setting and transformed to become a distinctive and award winning visitor attraction. Take time to shop for treasures in the renowned unusual gallery with an African flavour. Enjoy our famous morning or afternoon tea or come for a delicious garden lunch with family or friends. (Lunch bookings recommended). Walk the expansive sculpture gardens displaying the largest collection of Zimbabwean stone and metal art in New Zealand. Birdwoods is a place 'Where Everything has a Story' and you leave feeling better than when you came.

Stunning setting. Loved the sculptures, the gardens, craft shop and lolly shop. We visited for morning tea and the French Press coffee was exceptional. The savory and sweet scones were simply superb. Presentation and service was absolutely first class. Highly recommended and advise booking as we can well imagine this venue being exceptionally popular.

What a delightful and well presented group of businesses. The sweet shop presented our purchases in delightful parcels and having all of the jar sweets at one price was great. The gift shop had a range I haven't seen before with Colombian jewellery being my selection. The piece de resistance was our lunch in the tent. The pork belly salad was light, fresh and accompanied by a fragrant sesame oil dressing, magnificent. Taking the opportunity to wander among the many sculptures was an enjoyable experience

I wish to say what wonderful friendly staff Birdwoods Sculpture Garden & Cafe in Havelock North have. It’s a little piece of paradise in the country. My sister and I visited for tea & cakes which I had the Rhubarb & Caramel cake.
. It was delicious. I highly recommend to take friends and family to visit as the gardens with the stone sculptures are beautiful. It is very well maintained and a delight to stroll around in. Thank you. We will be back again soon.

We thought a drive out to Birdwoods for lunch in peaceful surroundings would be a great end to the weekend. Arrived just after 1pm and got a table inside. Eventually got to order a coffee, cold drink and a Caesar Salad each. The coffee and drink arrived some time later and it was nearly an hour before the food arrived and just at the instant we had decided to get up and leave. Looking around, other diners were either waiting for food or waiting for to order. When I asked what the issue was ... I was told that there was delays in the kitchen. When I asked why no one had bothered to come and explain, the waiter apologised.

The issue here is not the kitchen and it’s not the wait staff ... it’s the restaurant manager who had no idea what was going on was clearly not in control. Asleep at the wheel.

The food was nice, but the service and management was rubbish. I don’t think we will bother going back ... the drive from Napier to Havelock North is just not worth the gamble.

Dear Phil, We apologise you had to wait longer than usual on Saturday the 6th March. We remember it well – we had two key management staff members sick, and we had a lot of bookings and a couple of younger waiters. It is disappointing to our team that you were not bold enough to ask for the owners, one of whom was on duty, and we would have absolutely fronted up and made good the situation and likely refunded you your meals as you were so unhappy, rather than reverting to keyboard warrior mode. We take our trip advisor reviews very personally and of the hundreds of thousands of people we have hosted over the years we have had less than three one-star reviews which is a 'Terrible' rating. This is where I will defend our team and our business as your comments were insulting to say the least. You were not treated rudely, your food was not inedible, you were in a beautiful setting, unfortunately your waiter was young and inexperienced and to ‘rubbish’ us is dis-respectful to say the least. We acknowledge that and are working very hard to make sure they service team get up to speed to be able to handle every customer situation, including grumpy difficult ones. The very worst that happened is that you had to wait quite a long time for your food. We notice that you have written seven Tripadvisor reviews in total, five of which you have given the lowest star possible. Our issue with you is not what you said, it is how you said it and whilst we would have accepted a poor or average review, terrible is not fair nor true. Given that – we will take it on the chin and work even harder to uphold to uphold the excellent reputation Birdwoods generally has. Our other reviews are testament to this. Sincerely, Louise Stobart - Owner

We have been to Birdwoods many times however the last 3 times have been disappointing and unsure if we will be back. Obviously the setting is beautiful and the food is what you would expect at a cafe like this but the service has started to deteriorate. All visits have been wine, coffee or tea and purely cabinet food that have taken close to an hour (and on one occasion over an hour) to be served. No mention of a wait time nor were there many people around us for that matter. Waitresses don’t seem to know if you’ve ordered, are still waiting for food, or if the dirty plates in front of you are even yours despite us initially asking nicely for them to be cleared from the previous patrons. Perhaps some better training of staff might be in order as the service here is letting the standard slip significantly.

Obviously this is not a review we like to read and we appreciate your comments as they are useful in our training sessions. This time of year is hard in hospitality as we lose great staff that we have had during the summer months as they return to studies and school. We take your comments seriously and are making training a priority. Please do ask for me next time you come so I can make sure you are compensated for your previously poor experiences. Kindest regards, Louise Stobart - Owner

I knew the venue had an art gallery and sweet shop - what I also found was a gorgeous oasis of lawn, trees and stunning large stone sculptures at very reasonable prices. There was live music, so wandering around the sculptures with a fresh fruit ice cream was a delight. There is also and extensive cafe, indoor art and craft gallery and then the cute sweet shop. This is a lovely place for family to visit. This would also make a great venue for an event, with a cute private room within the garden.

Apologies for the late response, but we are delighted you were surprised by what lies beyond the entrance of Birdwoods. It is always good when we have live music as it means the weather is warm enough to do so and Mike Cooch plays so well for us during the summer months. Kindest regards, Louise Stobart - Owner

From someone who works in hospitality, true and good service is something hard to find. From the quality and aesthetic of the food to the lovely manner of our waiter, our visit at Birdwoods was one of the best we have experienced in a long time. Special props to our waiter, a young whippersnapper who was incredibly accommodating to our dietary needs. Thank you to the Birdwoods team for a magical afternoon! I’m

Absolutely love this place - from the gardens to the sculptures, to the sweets, to the food, we actually can’t fault any of it.

We build a visit here into any trip we make to the Hawke’s Bay. This time my wife’s mother joined us as we knew she would love it based on our experiences here. To make sure we wouldn’t miss out we reserved a table (glad we did as it was a busy Sunday afternoon typical of this holiday season) and arrived to see the set up had changed and you now have to wait to be seated and pay at the end, which is great!

The lady who sat us and our server were both attentive and friendly and when we saw a different table pop up, let us swap to that one without a hassle.

I never go past the braised beef and my wife the ravioli - both as excellent as always! The only disappointment was my wife not letting me get an iced chocolate, but I did get some excellent sugar free lollies from the sweet shop.

The new set up is awesome and we can’t wait to come back again!

Thank you - you have made my day! We are delighted you approve of our new service changes which are in place to give the customers an even better experience along with our staff being able to manage everyone well. Our wait times have come right down to a very acceptable time and the counter queues are no longer! We have cut back on the number of lunch tables we had, therefore we do recommend you book. The extra tables are being filled up with happy ice-cream and coffee customers! We look forward to having you back and thank you again for your positive feedback. Louise Stobart - Owner

We’ve visited Birdwoods a while back and I have yet to write about how lovely the place was. It was the last month of winter so it was still chilly but definitely getting those warm sun rays and it was just so nice having a coffee and going for a walk to see the sculptures. The shop as well was aesthetically intriguing. Definitely go and have a visit!

Birdwoods Gallery is very popular so it is best to book a table, especially if going for lunch on a cold and windy day! There is, however, plenty of seating outdoors. We were just meeting relatives for a coffee and did not think to reserve a table. However, the friendly staff welcomed us and managed to seat us in the outdoor marquee. The plunger coffee was delicious, served with milk and cream. Espresso coffees are available at a kiosk. The large gift shop has a wide selection of crafts, jewellery and other items, supporting artists in Africa and NZ. The garden contains interesting and varied sculptures for sale. There is an old school sweet shop next door. We highly recommend a visit!
