We went there on a Thursday lunch and were surprised at how busy it was. Our friends who live in the area knew about it, had been there and so as we were on a house swap exchange with some friends in Napier (from Australia)...More

We were recommended to visit by friends in Napier. So glad we took their advice. What a treat to have fresh plunger coffee served with both milk and cream. Wizz bang coffee machines are not really our thing. You would never believe the building had...More

we have been here twice now, and just love the place. The food and coffee are a little expensive - but always excellent. I especially recommend the savory scones that are served with butter and chutney., No fancy coffees here just the best in Hawke's...More

The food is really good here. There are tables inside with airconditioning but most are outside in the lovely garden area. The owners travel to Zimbabwe regularly and bring back amazing art to sell which is exhibited in the garden and the shop (at very...More

We visit Birdwood's regularly with out of town guests. Weather permitting (which it usually does), we eat outside under the large shade trees. The food is varied, and their desserts are generous and exceptional. Don't expect a flat white or cappuccino, because the only coffee...More

Very nice morning teas which you can have in the garden. Real fruit ice creams also go down well with the kids, who also will love the sweet shop.

Amazing little cafe, sculpture garden keeping the kids entertained. The real fruit ice cream was amazing!! The only thing that let it down was only offering plunger coffee. But be prepared for this and have one before you go!

Thank you for the review and sorry you are not a fan of plunger coffee - we are famous for it! There are 35 coffee machines in the Village so everyone is well cared for. Best wishes, Louise Stobart - Owner

I think that you and the owner misunderstand my review. To the owner, yes, detailed because I was reviewing the soup ONLY, not the ambience or decorations or garden or any other feature. Specific because I've not sampled the entire menu. The 'M' stood for Maggi. I'm sorry that the bizarre mix of condiments and spices each fighting for notice gave all three of us the sensation of ersatz, but it did, and I understand why. Also beef jus in mushroom soup - and not telling customers at the counter? Not cool. What has 'cafe not fine dining' got to do with taste? I'm not dissing customers who liked and like the soup, so you have no need to diss my review. My view is that good fresh mushrooms have no need of flavours which overpower their delicacy. There were plenty of mushrooms, as I said, but they were simply swamped by too many other ingredients. My view. Not yours. But I'm entitled to my view. As for Birdwoods, we went there on my recommendation because my previous visit was in the summer, in the garden. The garden is very pleasant. The interior on the second visit was warm etc., but I repeat, I reviewed the soup, not the place.

Of course you can as we love dogs at Birdwoods! However Council does not permit them in the Conservatory dining area, but there is plenty of table space in the garden weather permitting. Kind regards, Louise Stobart
