    A must to visit!
We had a lovely visit to Birdwood for a late luch. The service was outstanding, prompt and attentive. The food was absolutely delicious, a real highlight. The gallery is lovely and the grounds are gorgeous with sculptures everywhere and plenty for the kids to do. The sweep shop was so popular the queue was out the door. This is a must to visit when you're in Hawkes Bay
Thank you for the lovely review, it is much appreciated. Louise Stobart

Great place to visit for all ages. The Lolly shop is a real treat with a huge range of sweats to choose from. Ice cream shop in the summer. Cafe, shop, lovely garden to explore.
Thank you for your review and so glad you enjoyed your visit. Kind regards, Louise Stobart

    Much better than last time.
Known for being very sensitive and defensive at the slightest criticism and known for attacks on any critics I ventured back to see if there had been any improvement on the last visit. Good to report there had been. The staff were friendly and the coffee and food really much better than last time. It is a really nice environment. However they do need to review the one pint of payment regardless of order. Good to see that despite the bluster and defence they do take the reviews seriously and try to make improvements. Well done.
Hello Mike from Auckland, thank you for keeping us on our toes, I do admit I was a little defensive in my response to your review, but hospitality is a brutal and challenging world and I take reviews possibly too personally. However, you did make us pick up the pace, so am glad that you returned for a better experience, and yes we are putting a third point of payment in to smooth out the flow. Keep coming back and one day I look forward to meeting you here. Louise Stobart - Owner

    Phenomenal
Exceptional, unique place. The high tea was the best I’ve had, with top class service. We messed up the booking but they bent over backwards to accommodate us, and we’re delighted they did. The manager is a real credit to the business, lovely chap. I would highly recommend!
What a lovely review to read and thank you for all your comments. I have passed this onto the team, and in particular, Richard, the Manager. Thank you again, Louise Stobart - Owner

    More than just a lunch!!!
We went on recommendation of friends. We enjoyed looking at the sculptures and we bought lollies from the lolly shop which had extensive choices. Lunch was lovely. I had the smashed avocado which came out as a work of art and was delicious. Our friends all enjoyed their lunches too. Only downside is that we didn't get enough cutlery and when I went and asked for more knives she wanted to know what table I was at and looked over to see where I was. She was not very friendly about it. But overall a great place to go.
Thank you for your nice review and so glad you enjoyed the smashed avocado dish which is always received with delight as it looks so good. Thank you for letting me know about the waiter - always a work in progress and is noted. Best wishes, Louise Stobart - Owner

    "Beautiful country surroundings"
Have been here before when we have been in Napier. The gallery, cafe, gardens and huge sculptures is such a beautiful place to relax and enjoy the amazing surroundings around you. We just love everything about this place. We visit here everytime we are in the Hawkes Bay. You wont be disappointed. Something for everyone.
Thank you very much for your loyalty and for continuing to visit us. We were delighted with your lovely review and I have passed this onto our hard working team. Kindest regards, Louise Stobart - Owner

What a delightful and well presented group of businesses. The sweet shop presented our purchases in delightful parcels and having all of the jar sweets at one price was great. The gift shop had a range I haven't seen before with Colombian jewellery being my selection. The piece de resistance was our lunch in the tent. The pork belly salad was light, fresh and accompanied by a fragrant sesame oil dressing, magnificent. Taking the opportunity to wander among the many sculptures was an enjoyable experience

We’ve visited Birdwoods a while back and I have yet to write about how lovely the place was. It was the last month of winter so it was still chilly but definitely getting those warm sun rays and it was just so nice having a coffee and going for a walk to see the sculptures. The shop as well was aesthetically intriguing. Definitely go and have a visit!

We went here for lunch on a Friday on our arrival at Havelock North. We had been here previously for a summer lunch and had really loved it.

It was pretty crowded, even though we got there about 11.30am. We hadn’t booked a table as we had travelled from Wellington that morning so couldn’t guarantee our arrival time.

We had to wait a few minutes for a seat but the waitress was very helpful and very quickly found us a seat inside – there were tables available outside but it would have been too cold. We both had a beef burger. It was nice especially the beetroot relish.

While we enjoyed our lunch, I think I’d prefer to go back there in summer as my memories of sitting outside in the shade on a hot day with a cold drink have stayed with me. But don’t let that put you off going in winter, the food, service and ambience is very good.

We thought a drive out to Birdwoods for lunch in peaceful surroundings would be a great end to the weekend. Arrived just after 1pm and got a table inside. Eventually got to order a coffee, cold drink and a Caesar Salad each. The coffee and drink arrived some time later and it was nearly an hour before the food arrived and just at the instant we had decided to get up and leave. Looking around, other diners were either waiting for food or waiting for to order. When I asked what the issue was ... I was told that there was delays in the kitchen. When I asked why no one had bothered to come and explain, the waiter apologised.

The issue here is not the kitchen and it’s not the wait staff ... it’s the restaurant manager who had no idea what was going on was clearly not in control. Asleep at the wheel.

The food was nice, but the service and management was rubbish. I don’t think we will bother going back ... the drive from Napier to Havelock North is just not worth the gamble.

Dear Phil, We apologise you had to wait longer than usual on Saturday the 6th March. We remember it well – we had two key management staff members sick, and we had a lot of bookings and a couple of younger waiters. It is disappointing to our team that you were not bold enough to ask for the owners, one of whom was on duty, and we would have absolutely fronted up and made good the situation and likely refunded you your meals as you were so unhappy, rather than reverting to keyboard warrior mode. We take our trip advisor reviews very personally and of the hundreds of thousands of people we have hosted over the years we have had less than three one-star reviews which is a 'Terrible' rating. This is where I will defend our team and our business as your comments were insulting to say the least. You were not treated rudely, your food was not inedible, you were in a beautiful setting, unfortunately your waiter was young and inexperienced and to ‘rubbish’ us is dis-respectful to say the least. We acknowledge that and are working very hard to make sure they service team get up to speed to be able to handle every customer situation, including grumpy difficult ones. The very worst that happened is that you had to wait quite a long time for your food. We notice that you have written seven Tripadvisor reviews in total, five of which you have given the lowest star possible. Our issue with you is not what you said, it is how you said it and whilst we would have accepted a poor or average review, terrible is not fair nor true. Given that – we will take it on the chin and work even harder to uphold to uphold the excellent reputation Birdwoods generally has. Our other reviews are testament to this. Sincerely, Louise Stobart - Owner

We have been to Birdwoods many times however the last 3 times have been disappointing and unsure if we will be back. Obviously the setting is beautiful and the food is what you would expect at a cafe like this but the service has started to deteriorate. All visits have been wine, coffee or tea and purely cabinet food that have taken close to an hour (and on one occasion over an hour) to be served. No mention of a wait time nor were there many people around us for that matter. Waitresses don’t seem to know if you’ve ordered, are still waiting for food, or if the dirty plates in front of you are even yours despite us initially asking nicely for them to be cleared from the previous patrons. Perhaps some better training of staff might be in order as the service here is letting the standard slip significantly.

Obviously this is not a review we like to read and we appreciate your comments as they are useful in our training sessions. This time of year is hard in hospitality as we lose great staff that we have had during the summer months as they return to studies and school. We take your comments seriously and are making training a priority. Please do ask for me next time you come so I can make sure you are compensated for your previously poor experiences. Kindest regards, Louise Stobart - Owner

I wish to say what wonderful friendly staff Birdwoods Sculpture Garden & Cafe in Havelock North have. It’s a little piece of paradise in the country. My sister and I visited for tea & cakes which I had the Rhubarb & Caramel cake.
. It was delicious. I highly recommend to take friends and family to visit as the gardens with the stone sculptures are beautiful. It is very well maintained and a delight to stroll around in. Thank you. We will be back again soon.

We went to Birdwood while we were in the Hawkes Bay on recommendation of our local Uncle and Aunt.

If you are looking for a nice lunch in a garden this is great. They also have a garden full of sculpture to walk around and look at while you wait, along with animals and toys for the kids to play with on the lawn.

We had lunch under the marquee in the garden. There is also a Shop full of very interesting items to take a look at.

The food was beautiful. We loved our salads.

Because it is such a nice place, and the day was stunning it was very busy and there was a bit of a wait to sit and then eat. However, the service was friendly and I quite like to spend an afternoon in the garden so it was no problem.

A beautiful place for high tea, lunch or just to stop for a coffee. The grounds are filled with local sculptures that you can view for free, there’s an ice-cream stand and you can enjoy lunch in the gardens. We opted for lunch and a coffee which were very delicious then wandered through the homewares gallery and sweet shop. A relaxing spot that must be visited

Friends brought us here for an afternoon coffee/tea. The restaurant has a beautiful manicured garden full of interesting art that is still very family friendly.we liked it so much we returned twice in the same week. The food is lovely, the staff are friendly, engaging and just lovely people and the venue is one of a kind. Great for Breakfast, lunch or just a coffee/tea. Also the ice creams are awesome.

A bit average overall. The food took ages and was generally overpriced. However the gardens were quite nice and the wait staff worked hard to please. Little things like wobbly tables etc need to be fixed. Given the competition has upped their game these guys need a bit of a reboot

I am trying hard to not take your flick of the keyboard quite so personally, so will enjoy a cathartic response…. Mike, from Auckland. Average?? The whole Birdwoods experience is not ‘Average’ according to our almost 20 years of being in the hospitality business, it is Excellent if you look at our ratings. We are not a five-minute millennial wonder; we have stood the test of time and generally have an excellent reputation which our large team work at constantly. I agree, the food did take longer than it should, but we have recently had Easter, Mission Concert weekend and school holidays, and we are very busy for a reason. As for being over-priced. Have you been to the supermarkets lately? Do you pay staff wages, time and a half, days in lieu? You might get it then. Oh, and perhaps you need reminding... the Covid years, staff shortages, illness, and I forget…., a recent devastating cyclone that flooded our ‘quite nice gardens’ and took out numerous trees, but yet we are undaunted and still in business, which is not only about the cafe, it is bigger than that, so before you take to the keyboard and give this business the Average flick, maybe think about the people behind it before assuming we need a ‘reboot’. We have done that and are stronger than ever. This is our life you are dismissing, so perhaps drive back to Auckland through Esk Valley, sip on your triple shot and before you write dismissive commentary on social media, be a little more considerate. However, we will fix the wobbly table immediately! Thank you.
