We did the one-night Northern Lights tour with Northern Tales and found our guide to be very professional, knowledgeable, and great at her job. Although we didn't end up seeing the Aurora Borealis, she was wonderful at keeping us "entertained" all evening, by sharing her experiences and knowledge with the group. The location itself seems ideal for viewing, as there is very little light pollution and it provides a broad vista in which to see the night sky, and, if you're lucky, to actually take in the Northern Lights.
The company seems very COVID-aware, as they provide hand sanitizer when you get in the vehicle, as well as at the warming hut. You are also required to wear a face mask when indoors, and they limit the number of people allowed on a tour. When you're picked, you're given a reusable shopping bag (thanks for not using plastic!) with lots of snacks!
Even though we weren't able to see the Lights, we felt very happy with the quality of the tour and would recommend it to others.

My wife and I were planning to be in Canada in Feb and decided to tack on a couple of days in Whitehorse in the hope of seeing the Northern Lights, we've been fortunate on two other trips and coming from a part of the world that it's in the wrong latitude, the opportunity is too good to resist.
The Northern Tales team are friendly and professional and the booking process is simple.
The actual tour is well put together and they'll pick you up from downtown Whitehorse and take you out to their well appointed location away from the towns streetlights.
Although the aurora wasn't overly strong that night, we did get to see it. When we arrived the sky was perfectly clear, however the clouds did come across and cover the sky. It's always a risk you take and obviously not the fault of the Northern Tales team, however on this occasion it would've been cool to get straight into it with the encroaching overcast conditions, as we lost some time sitting around talking and having flash photos taken before being able to set up our cameras.
The huts they have there are superb, you can head in and warm up by the stove, grab a hot chocolate and a snack. There's also an open fire outside the hut if you want to warm up there and toast a marshmallow.
The guides were excellent and heap of fun as well. Once it was obvious the clouds weren't going to clear we ended up taking a few fun photos with extended camera exposure. They're actually pretty talented with the red light, drawing pictures in the air that gave us a fun souvenir of our time in the Yukon.
We only had time enough in the Yukon to do one night, but a few people there were on multiple nights which is a great idea if you're able to increase your chances of seeing the aurora. If we're back in that part of the world in a few years when solar activity ramps up again, we'll definitely come back and book through Northern Tales.

We visited the Yukon primarily to see the Northern Lights and had an outstanding experience with the Northern Tales aurora excursion. The guides were the highlight of the trip. They were organized and extremely knowledgeable about the best ways of viewing and photographing the lights. They helped us with setting up our cameras and cell phones, and took photos of us with the aurora using their digital SLR all evening. They just exuded a cheerful, friendly attitude and were a joy to be around.
The Northern Tales facilities were excellent. The viewing site is about a 25 minute drive from Whitehorse via company van. They are far enough away from the light pollution of the town to get a clear view of the aurora. At the property you will find a warm cabin with a stove, snacks, coffee, and hot chocolate as well as an open campfire. Both were a very short walk from the viewing area, so if you want to maximize your viewing time, it is easy to hit the cabin or fire for a quick warm up and then go back to the field. Northern Tales provides tripods for your phone/camera, which are essential for getting good photographs.
We were fortunate to see a beautiful display of the lights on the night we went. They stretched from the north to east horizons, danced, and even showed colors visible to the naked eye. We were able to capture some stunning still and time lapse photos using our cell phone. If you are going to go see an unpredictable natural phenomenon like the aurora, you should book one or more nights with Northern Tales to make the experience as fun and memorable as possible.

Northern Tales have many packages available. We chose the multi-night package including 2 nights at Boreale Lodge, and night aurora viewings. We added on dog sledding, snow mobiling and visiting the hot springs. To accommodate these additions, we added one more night to the package.
Northern Tales were extremely well organized with passionate and friendly staff. We enjoyed our stay thoroughly and would highly recommend them to anyone who visits Whitehorse.
We saw a brilliant aurora show on our final night and would like to thank Northern Tales’ tour guides/photographers for their patience and passion in capturing the moment for all!

Repeat customer! We loved the experience that Northern Tales offers so much that we came back and had another amazing trip two years later. The accommodations were lovely, in Whitehorse and the Boreal Lodge, WOW! City tour with Tom as our guide might be my favorite part of this trip, he was truly knowledgeable because he has been to many of the locations he tells you about.
No regrets at all and already looking forward to the third visit.

We loved our recent visit to Whitehorse. Northern tales was fantastic, from airport pickup to drop off and all the excursions in between, it was very well organised. Francois on our city tour was welcoming, friendly, enthusiastic and informative. We also did the Northern lights tour with him, which was amazing. We were very lucky to “see” the Aurora Borealis on all 3 nights, but folks, don’t expect fancy light dancing etc as they are only seen through the long shutter speed of a camera and are vague to the naked eye. The stars and setting were incredible!
Kieran took us out on the Ultimate Winter Experience and he was fantastic, so much fun, energy and life plus knowledgeable about the wildlife and life in the Yukon. We loved having Kiera explore with us and teach us tobogganing🎈👏.
Dogsledding was a highlight😮
Wish we had longer to spend more time in the village.

We are so happy to have Northern Tales as our travel guide for our Yukon trip. Everything’s organized & timely from the airport pickup to drop off. We couldn’t ask for more of the excellent service of the guides(Taz, Werner, Tom, Angie, Samtosi(?not sure) & Erika. They’re all very nice, accommodating to our needs
and knowledgeable. They’re patient and provide us with all information about the tours.
One suggestion is to have the Aurora viewing a bit later, as the lights happened close to 1:00 am, so the very cool & nice Angie had willingly stayed for another hour or so.
We will definitely go for Northern Tales again for our future Yukon travels and would highly recommend it to our family & friends.

Excellent tours! Our family booked with Northern Tales the aurora borealis, dog sled, and snowmobile tours and we really enjoyed all of them. Everyone is super nice since the time of booking all the way to the actual tours. All guides were great, well informed, and very nice.
On the Aurora Borealis tours they explained everything about auroras, the camp, how to figure out the correct settings to take pictures with your camera, and even took great pictures with their company's camera (which later can be downloaded).
For the dog sledding and snowmobile tours they booked us with a company located higher in the mountain in order to guarantee enough snow in April so that we could enjoy the experiences. Both of these tours were also incredible.
Our family really enjoyed everything offered by Northern Tales and we recommend their services.

My Daughter (19) and I took a Father / Daughter trip to the Yukon to view the Northern Lights over Family Day weekend. We had a terrific showing of the lights and enjoyed the entire experience with Northern Tales.
They have a great operation that works like clock work. It's an easy trip to do over a few days, great value for money and all within Canada so none of the testing requirements etc.
We really enjoyed our time with Norther Tales and highly recommend to anyone else thinking of this trip to engage Northern Tales as it is not just about seeing the Aurora, it is about the whole experience while in Whitehorse for which these guys have it mastered.

Epic trip to The Yukon.
We went Northern Lights viewing and to The Wildlife Preserve and Hot Springs with Northern Tales, they included pickup from the airport and a short city tour of Whitehorse as well.
Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) is a natural phenomenon and of course not guaranteed to see, but we were lucky enough to see the lights on the last day.
Northern Tales took awesome pictures with professional camera equipment and provided us with arctic winter clothing that kept us warm during the cold Yukon nights. We roasted some Elk and Bison Sausages by the campfire and original Canadian S'Morres (Marshmello Caramello).
The guides are super fun and knowledgeable, especially Kevin and Aaron.
Kevin informed us with some astonishing facts about The Yukon Wildlife during the Preserve tour. Very interesting facts about the animals living in this territory!
During our Whitehorse City Tour Aaron dropped some serious knowledge about The History of this land and gave us awesome recommendations for the best local shops, restaurants and specialties. (i.e. Bison Cranberry Sausage at the DELI)
Northern Tales is great organization and we would like to Thank all of You a lot for making this such an unforgettable experience for us.

What time of the year is it better to visit? How does work now during pandemic ?
Written February 13, 2021
Hi looks really interesting. Thinking of going in either Feb or March of next year 2021. Coming from Quebec I’m sure we don’t have to quarantine. Are there rooms with 2 single beds?

Hi. In whitehorse we stayed at the Best Western Rush Inn and it worked for us and that is what we were assigned for the tour. It is a hotel of the 90´s with spacious rooms, but it already needs remodeling. On the site of sighting, they are nice cabins where you can have coffee, tea, chocolate and cookies.

Hello!
I plan to travel to Yukon in August 2020.
I want to see aurora, but will the aurora float between 23rd and 29th August 2020?
If I can see the Northern Lights, I want to join your tour. And I wonder when should I make a reservation. It's two people including me.
Is it too late to reserve the tour when we arrive in Whitehorse?
Written December 21, 2019
Hi Yenny, thank you very much for your message. Yes, August 2020 is a good time to see the aurora. In order to make a reservation or for us to provide you with more detailed information I kindly ask you to send us an e-mail. Thank you very much and we are looking forward to hearing from you soon. Are the dates of November 13 and 14 good nights to catch the Aurora Borealis ?
Written November 1, 2019
It really depends on the weather. If the skies are not clear you will not see them. We were told that from mid Oct to mid Dec there seems to be more unsettled weather and your chances are not as good. Check and see when the Fall Solstice is and that usually is a good time as well. Yellowknife is better than Whitehorse for seeing them.

Hi Northern Tales, can please check if teenagers (aged 14 to 17) are able to operate the snow mobiles and dog sleds? Thanks.
Written August 21, 2019
Hi there! The minimum age to drive a snow machine is 16 years and it is then still the guide who makes the final decision, based on the physical conditions and maturity of the teenager. The 14 year old as well as the 17 year old can drive a dog sled. Thank you!

If you organise your viewing with adventure companies such as Northern Tales, you can hire heavy duty winter gear for CAD 150. Good luck!
