The 19th century church sits quietly and nondescript along rue Saint-Jean. Don't let the weathered and grungy exterior fool you. You will be amazed at how incredibly ornate the interior is. Take note of the extravagantly gilded altar and the marble pulpit. High up on the walls are beautiful stained-glass windows which portray significant moments in the life and times of Jesus and John the Baptist. I enjoyed attending Sunday mass here and listening to the French rendition of the prodigal son.

We walked past this church several times and it appears that it might be closed permanently. It is an exceptionally beautiful example of French second Empire style and the grey stonework is architecturally beautiful. Definitely worth a stop to appreciate the beauty of this historical monument.

St-Jean-Baptiste Church is a MUST SEE. Everybody needs to visit this church at least once in a lifetime. The church is situated west of the Old Town, on rue St-Jean. It is the heart of the old Faubourg St-Jean-Baptiste also worth a visit with its nice shops, bars and people. On you way, stop and visit the Old St-Matthew Cemetery and Church. You will also pass in front of JA Moisan, the oldest grocery store still open of Quebec city. There is no doubt, St-Jean-Baptiste is the most beautiful Church in Quebec city - you will be amazed at how incredibly ornate the interior is to quote "TheAnswer".

This is a gorgeous Church in a really great area of Quebec City. It is one of the oldest areas of the city, with a grocery store nearby that is over a hundred years old. The Church sits at a very nice spot in the Upper Town. As you face the Church, the Lower Town can be seen to your left and there are some of the oldest houses in Quebec City to the right.

If this church is open, during your next visit, it's worth your time to go inside and observe the beautiful alter, stained glass windows ... and more. We did observe , what appeared to be street people, sitting outside the church, but presented no problem.

Unsure what the status is here but it was closed with an awful lot of homeless people encamped. It has been closed for a while as dirt and trash has accumulated.

Beside the Avenue Cartier, in which I had became acquainted for the first time,with the everyday life of Quebec City, the other very important street was for sure, the Rue St.Jean. This last one takes its beginning at the intersection of Chemin St.Foy and Avenue de Salaberry in which I had lived, and leads straight forward to the east, that is, toward the very core of Old Quebec with the citadels,ramparts, the cathedral Notre-Dame of Quebec, the Chateau Frontenac and Old Port on the banks of St.Laurence River. While the Avenue Cartier represents one commercial artery of the city, the Rue St.Jean is all the noble one, as it is adequate street for such a person of Saint John The Baptist, after whom it is called. Something dignifiedly, there is in this street, as You're making Your promenade along its beautiful stone facades of the houses from seventeenth, eighteenth,nineteenth centuries. And as the cherry on the top of the pie, stands this remarkable church from the 1847. It is all in Italian marble and distinguished parts of the structure are the high spire, the number of staines glass windows, the statues, the paintings. The very impressive is the interior of the church, with nave, sanctuary, pulpit and altar.

This Church is probably among the most beautiful I've ever visited, is patrimony of Quebec, inside is beautiful but also inviting, nice friendly people show you around, a hidden jewel in the city.

This is a teriffic site. We saw it at sunset and it added to the mystic of the place. The details of the masonry are outstanding.

We were walking by this enormous church & taken by its size and the workers stripping paint off the front door, we decided to go inside. Inside we found a magnificently decorated church with beautiful gilded altar, inspiring windows with an outstanding pipe organ in the choir loft topped by a statue of St Cecelia. We talked to one of the guides and were saddened to learn this once enormous vibrant parish had dwindled to 100 communicants each weekend. Throughout the church, confessionals had been turned into display cases for artifacts & photos from the parish's 150 yr history documenting the generations who had worked so hard to build this enormous structure. It was very nice to hear that the government of Canada was committed to preserving its religious landmarks.
