Price Brothers were Canada’s leading newsprint producers in the 1920’s. The cornerstone for the building was laid on Oct 29, 1929, Black Tuesday, an inauspicious day. The building was finished in less than a year. At [then] 16 storeys and 82m, it soared to the heavens, out of place in the Old Town. Its Art Deco look was similar to the Chrysler building, an NYC icon. Its copper roof paid homage to that of the Chateau Frontenac. A later municipal bylaw would limit the height of future buildings in the area to 20m or 65’. Continuing life as an office building today, it will inevitably find itself in some of your photographs. Whatever apologists say to the contrary, it still ultimately strikes me as out of place.

Price House was built just as the market crashed... It still is the highest building within the old walled city. At night, it is beautifully illuminated, and it catches your eye along with the Chateau Frontenac. You can't visit it, unfortunately. One of the floors houses the premier of Québec province.

Built in 1931, the 296 ft. high building should be the first skyscraper in Quebec. Entry to this private building is prohibited but you can notice it at a distance because of its height.

The Price Brothers were Canada’s leading newsprint producers in the early part of the 20th century. They started to build it in October 19 29, 1929 and finished it in about a year. It dominates the city’s skyline. Worth 30 minutes of your time

1) the Quebec version of a New York Skyscraper during the building era
2) well maintained classic styling under UNESCO heritage protection
3) nice backdrop as a second tower in the Old Town after the Chateaux
Enjoy

Those without a keen interest in architecture may not be interested in this structure, especially since it is impossible to go inside. But as an architecture buff, I couldn't resist going out of my way for a closer look. I first noticed the 18-story building when walking outside Old Quebec's walls near the St. Louis Gate. It stands out, along with the iconic Chateau Frontenac, because of the height when compared with the much lower buildings within the walls. Constructed between 1930 and 1931, the 296-foot-high Price Building was Quebec's first skyscraper.
I think it provides a nice example of Art Deco work being done in the 30s, with its tapered wedding-cake-shaped tower. But the 9-foot-tall steepled copper roof is more classical in style. The gray limestone facade displays carved geometric motifs.
Corporate offices take up the lower floors. But the apartment on the 16th and 17th floors encompasses the official residence of Quebec's premier. The 18th floor is devoted to machinery required for building operations.
The Price Building is easy to go by when visiting the nearby City Hall.

So we went unsure of what it was and its just a historical building. We couldn't go in but there was some info by the front door.

Don't buy into other gimmicks and tourist trap; This building is what Quebec is all about. We literally spent an entire day just gazing at this wonderful masterpiece.

We stayed at a hotel next door so we passed by many times. It is a handsome early 20th Century skyscraper, taller than anything in town except the cathedral spires.

May be famous but of all the buildings in the old town this one is not old or particularly interesting. Nice sculpture of Mr Price logging just beside the building.
