About
A must for art-lovers, kids and history addicts! Be amazed by this art and history museum about the work of the Ursulines of Québec, who established the first school for girls in New France and are reknown for their wonderful embroidery works. The Ursulines showed true openmindness through the centuries, adapting their teaching to their pupils and to what society needed. In the 17th Century, they gave classes to First Nations children in their own language. In the 19th Century, they were the first to include science and critical thinking in their teachings. For a complete, one-of-a-kind experience, follow a guide in the Chancel, a place usually accessible only by nuns and students.

Exhibition is interesting but when I bought tickets I had an impression it will be a tour. It is self - guided tour. Collection is interesting but not abundant. It was worth to see ( descriptions are in French and English) but if time is limited I won't kill myself to visit.

In the last 28 year prepandemic, we would visit Old Quebec at least once a year and we’re always been busy with outdoor activities and good food! But today is cold and warrants an indoor activity while the family went skiing.
I chose the Pole because of their history of educating girls! Not only did they achieve their goal but their vision to even introduce STEM to girls of that century is quite amazing.
Thanks to Louisette and Vincent for a wonderful afternoon! I will be back to see the chapel on my next trip! Merci et au revoir!

I was very impressed with this religious institution established a long time ago to provide an education for girls at a time when many did not believe in the concept. Tremendous forward thinking people who started this. The concept has spread and they have accomplished something great.

We stopped at the Chapel on our Walking Food Tour. Our guide Philip gave the history of The Ursuline’s coming to settle in New France (Quebec) building the first school for girls in New France. The church has two sections one for parishioners and at a 90 degree angel for the Cloistered Nuns, where they are not seen. It is a small beautiful church with an ornate altar. The other buildings are coed school today.

This museum turned out to be alittle more fascinating than we expected. These women were master embroiderers and we were really astonished at the beauty and amount of pieces that were displayed, along with many other aspects of thier lives, from furniture to personal items and art etc. My travelling partner thought this was her favorite museum in Quebec, and we went to maybe 15 museums! Highly recommended. As is the Chevalier House museum.

I visited the museum in Sept. 2003. The ticket-taker/hostess was very welcoming and there were docents to answer questions. There are 3 floors in an old building of material from 1639 to the present day. As a U.S. citizen, it was fascinating to see this alternative settling of the "New World." Instead of the muskets and stockades of Jamestown, there was incredibly elaborate embroidery and painting. The Ursuline's mandate is to teach girls, and early French settlements clearly had a different relationship to native peoples than did the English. The artwork was gorgeous and the display fascinating. I definitely recommend seeing it.

This is an excellent museum: it combines the history of the Ursuline order of nuns and the history of education in Quebec. Read as much as you can; there are fascinating insights into other local history too.

I visited it partly due to the comments I read on Trip Advisor and I'm very glad I did. It provided a glimpse into a life in the past before the age of universal education or feminism. This was one of the few places that young girls could receive a well rounded education and where women (i.e. the nuns) could spend their lives doing what they loved to do - teach. Made up of artifacts and recorded memories from the past, it is a fascinating visual description of the richness of education in the previous couple of centuries. And one doesn't have to be an RC to learn from it and enjoy the experience!

The Ursulines Museum is only part of the entire Ursuline complex. There is the museum, the school and the chapel. The museum is cheap to enter and cant be missed. The chapel was gorgeous containing the chapel of Marie de L'Incarnation. This is one attraction you should see.

A place to appreciate the dedication of these fine Nuns who educated the children of their New France home for many years and taught all the refined elements of the Quebec culture. You may view some of the best examples of needlework in North America at this museum. The Sisters and guides are very helpful in answering any questions about the order, it is a place to visit without question if interested in the history of Quebec and the work of Catholic educators.
