Place de la FAO is a lovely square. It commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO), founded in Québec City in 1945. The square is a great place to have lunch, dinner or just a cup of coffee at one of the many eateries in the area. The main feature of the square is a beautiful sculpted fountain called La Vivrière. It depicts a female figure holding in her arms food items from every continent, symbolizing the generosity, abundance and fertility of the Earth. The base of the monument indicates that the bank of the St. Lawrence River once reached this spot. The form and colours of the paving stones here evoke waves.

At the intersection of Rue Saint-Paul and Rue Saint-Pierre in the Lower Town is this little square. It commemorates the 50th anniversary of the 1945 founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization, an agency of the United Nations. A statue called La Vivriere holds the bounty of the earth. A notation advises the shore of the St Lawrence River previously was here. I did not get a good shot of the statue in the midday light.

Place de la FAO at the junction of Rue du Sault-au-Matelot near the shorefront has memorial significance to the city. Previously this was a dockyard area and now the area has been converted to shopping area for tourists instead. A plague marking the role played by Lester B. Pearson who was ambassador to UN at the time of the inauguration conference for the Food and Agriculture Organisation in 1945 had been erected there and his exceptional talents as diplomat earned him the Nobel Peace Price in 1957. The sloping base of sculpture thereat represents the wavy pattern of the bricks with the impression of waves lapping against the shoreline.

One of the prettiest squares in town, you will find this in the Lower City, surrounded by the very old and charming buildings in this area.
