Ballet brilliance
May 2019 • Couples
we are ballet lovers and have seen ballet in many parts of the world. Lake run by leg Canadian was truly a highlight. Technically superb with exquisite line, these contemporary dancers are among the best we have seen anywhere.

A Beautiful Display of Tradition and Diversity
Jan 2019 • Family
I had the wonderful opportunity to take my elderly mother to see the Nutcracker over the Christmas Holidays. I have seen the ballet many times and am always in awe of the costumes, choreography, and time-treasured traditions. However, what struck me this time was seeing how diverse Les Grands Ballet Canadiens has become. It was so nice to see dancers of different nationalities. Congratulations, Les Grands Ballets for being so inclusive.

Nutcracker for Christmas
Dec 2018 • Family
A must do if you are in Montreal while they perform the nutcracker. The theatre is lovely and the sense of tradition is strong. A lot of locals we spoke to had seen it as a child and were excited we were going. The sets and costumes were amazing and the dancers were very good. The theatre is easy to get to (walking for us, but lots of public transportation as well).

Mind-blowing, spectacular, inventive, wonderful!

We saw "Falling Angels," three dances that were incredibly inventive and thrilling to watch, and beautifully staged. Two of them had live music. Honestly, I've never seen anything quite like this. The production was acrobatic, theatrical, beautiful, profound, fun, exciting, and gorgeous. We were really excited to be there, and expect to return!

Impressive

Saw the Nutcracker (Casse-Noisette) at Place des Arts last night. The show is really impressive (dancers, decor, lighting...). Yes the tickets are rather expensive, but you have to see it once in your life. Beware, the show is long, especially after the break so little kids might just fall asleep at the night show. Perhaprs look for a matinee show with them.

The Nutcracker
Dec 2016 • Couples
My husband and I attended the afternoon showing of The Nutcracker, over the weekend, and loved it! We had both seen this classic of Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, when we were kids and we were so excited to go see it again, as adults.
The dancing was quite beautiful and the decor was spectacular and really impressive! From the second it started to the second it finished, we were impressed by the changing decors and the way the dancing was executed. The costumes could have been nicer/ more richly ornate, in my opinion. Act I was more interesting than Act II, as the story line is more palpable and easier to discern, as opposed to the second Act, which is mostly a series of dancing numbers from different people in the enchanted kingdom.
The whole ballet lasts 2 hours, 56 minutes for the first Act and 44 minutes for the second Act, with a 20 minutes intermission.

Extra tip: If attending with small children - make sure they use the washroom before the play as the lineup is impossible during intermission.

Nutcracker - a holiday must-see
Dec 2014 • Family
if you're in Montreal in December you must go see the Nutcracker (Casse-Noisette). Although I wouldn't suggest bringing children under the age of 8 just because the show is 2 hours long and if they get restless they are ruining it for other patrons (like the family with the 3 year old sitting behind us)... Les Grands Ballets Canadiens is an excellent company and the show is just delightful. I saw it with my son when he was 8 and he enjoyed it again this year at the age of 23...

La nuit transfigurée (Transfigured Night)

The Artistic Director, Gradimir Pankov is brilliant and over the past 14 years, has made Les Grands Ballets a world class company. This original ballet by renowned choreographer Stijn Celis was dedicated to Maestro Pankov who has done so much to enhance and modernise the ballet world. We enjoyed the skilled performance immensely. However, my very favourite of their ballets has to be Minus One. When we saw Kaguyahime: The Moon Princess, we loved it so much we bought tickets to see it again! The traditional and contemporary live music on the same stage was earth-shattering and uplifting.
