Great History of Montreal
Feb 2020
Great place to visit, you can spend an hour or several, proceed through history at your own pace. I learned so much about Montreal in such a short time, I never knew about the quiet revolution of the 60's in Montreal. I highly recommend visitors stop here early in their visit, the museum gives a great overview of the city and is very reasonable.

An interesting look at Montreal's history
Nov 2019
This museum is in a beautiful old firehall in Old Town. We enjoyed learning a lot about Montreal's history as well as exploring an entire floor dedicated to Expo '67. I would have liked to have learned more from their exhibit on the top floor (immigration) but the entire presentation is in French and while my French isn't bad I wasn't able to follow along as well as I had hoped. Not great for visitors (like my husband) who don't have any French.

Cheap entry fee (I think it was $7.50 for each of us) and will take about 1- 1.5 hours to complete.

Worth a visit
Nov 2019
A very compact museum split into three floors. The first gave a potted, if basic, history of Montreal. The second was a floor devoted to the Expo of 1967, something that I knew nothing about so found interesting. The top floor is dedicated to immigration to the city. It is however presented entirely in French which I struggled with a bit and so perhaps did not get the best from this aspect of the museum. Overall, probably worth 1-2 hours of your time for relatively cheap cost.

Beautiful old former Fire Station.
Sep 2019
The museum is on the corner of Place d’Youville and Rue Saint-Pierre. The building is a beautiful former firehouse converted to a museum. The area is a place to walk and take in the architecture of the old buildings.

Historical significance speaks volumes
Aug 2019
At more than 100 years of age, this former Fire Station could tell a story or two. Note that the architecture is a lot different from the other buildings us tourists see in Montreal Why? It's Flemish! See all those scallops up the sideof the building? That's the dead-give-away. That devil, it's always in the details.

Shifting to the here-and-now: the museum (and that is what this is) is open Wednesday to Sunday (10 to 5) but closed on Monday and Tuesday. There is a $6 charge for adults (there's some variance for other age groups) and a few floors are open for exploration.

The Fire House stopped functioning as a fire house in 1972 and it is a credit to Montreal that it hasn't knocked this all down and put up some modern wanna-be. Do take some time to appreciate those Flemish curves and take some time to wonder how that came to be in Montreal.

An interactive experience
Sep 2019 • Couples
As part of a self organised walking tour( map available from tourist info office) we called into this small museum and were delighted. The staff were most welcoming and the ground floor exhibits took us through the centuries, emphasising the cosmopolitan nature of Montreal.
On the next floor were broadcasts which brought to life more recent history - national and international-through the inhabitants of the city. That was very interesting.
The contents of the top floor I found very moving. It featured the hopes of young immigrants coming to the city, the things they missed, the revelations of a new culture and what might be the result of their immersion in Montreal life.
This is a gem of a museum.

great little museum

This is a well put together history of Montreal set in a old fire station. It was raining when we went so a perfect way to spend an informative couple of hours. There's a section on expo 67 upstairs which was interesting but none of it was in English as I recall which seems a bit daft....
