Peche Island is located at the mouth of the St Clair River on the Canadian side families like to go over and explore and have picnic on the Island . In the summer the city runs a pontoon boat to the island on certain days

My husband and I have been coming here for years. We take our kayaks over where on the East side of the island (if your facing Michigan) you can kayak into a channel that takes you under a bridge and into an oasis of beautifully clear water (yes, clear water in Windsor) and surrounding forest that houses beautiful swans, ducks, a fairly impressive array of fish and many species of birds. We have often built a camp fire and bring over some hotdogs and marshmallows. We bring our snorkel masks and swim around in the shallows in the middle of the island where you will see thousands of colourful tiny snail shells, fish, and the occasional lure that has been lost. If you're crossing with kayaks you are required to cross a boat channel that is fairly busy in the summertime and the current in the Detroit River is quite strong so if your not a strong rower or kayaker I'm not sure I would attempt crossing the island on my own, so please cross with caution. There is a Ferry now to bring more people over and I sincerely hope that those visiting will respect this beautiful space.

I came across the news that a new boat has started ferrying people to the island and I decided to check it out! For just $5 per seat, you can't get a better deal to reach the island without your own boat or kayak! I decided to go and explore the small island - It was relaxing walking through the trail and shorelines. There are spots for having picnics if you so desire. I am sure it will be a huge hit by the time they finish all the improvements currently in progress.

The trails gives you the opportunity to see nature at work - swan, ducks, spotted eagle, trees, wrecks, etc... - I sat by the old bridge and watched so many people kayaking on the island!

Someone actually asked me 'How did you get to this island?' . I guess because he didn't see my kayak :) I spent about 4 hours on the island and before you know it - it was time to go!

I will surely be back with my whole family!

With all the attention the island is getting these last few summers it has been terribly disheartening to see what daily tourists have done to its environment and eco system. I see piles of toilet paper all over, various paths you can't even go down for the smell of human wastes sends you feeling, the garbage left everywhere, the larger, motorized vessels ramming the beach & washing it away at a rapid rate (it was only a couple years ago that tree in the middle of the beach in the water was alive & well). The ignorance & disrespect of others property by visitors is astounding! If so etching does not belong to you (ie. Some else's kayak!) don't touch it, or go joy riding or playing with it. No joke, you could seriously put someone in a very bad situation by damaging their only way back to land. Hands off. Have respect, for both people & the island. It won't be here much longer at its present erosion rate, and the piles they recently erected to combat this problem were placed on the wrong side of the island. The erosion is happening on the Detroit side of the island not the Windsor side. But it will all be gone soon enough if everyone keeps using it at the rate it's going.
