This watering hole has been drawing jazz fans since it first opened in 1951. Admittedly the decor hasn't changed much since the old days, but the sounds you'll find here are cutting edge. The Rex lures top local and international talent; Tuesday is the weekly jam night.

Really enjoyed our night at the Rex. The beer is really good. The atmosphere is definitely local. The music was fantastic. And really felt like I was at a historic spot in Toronto

Live jazz music was amazing. Service can get a bit slow due to the packed audience. A bit on the pricey side for drinks but well worth attending if you're visiting Toronto or you enjoy the blues. Evening entrance is paid at the door. We paid $12. Crowd is older with some younger folks but not very many. Staff has... More

I didn't find Toronto's nightlife exciting, so against this backdrop Rex stands out as a very good option to spend a pleasant evening. The staff are very attentive.

We stayed in this hotel for two nights. There is no reception desk for the hotel, you check in/out at the bar (which is clean and very atmospheric). The rooms are small and there is no possibility to open the window so the air was heavy and not pleasant. The room was clean. The communal bathroom on the floor was... More

Heard Robi Botos and the group 'rinsethealgorithm '. An amazing musical experience. Place was packed with knowledgeable jazz lovers. A neighborhood hit.

I visited the location at 4:00 pm on June 27 with 6 friends, there was no collective seating for 6, and the waiter didn't want to move tables, so we went to a longer seating section in the main area. The waiter an older gentlemen took orders for drinks, but both of our beer first choices were sold out, because... More

The thing that I most enjoyed at Rex was the music. If you're one to enjoy jazz music then this is the place for you. The service is good as well. I've never had any food there, only beer, so I can't comment about it.

This place gets two circles because it wasn't completely horrible, but it's definitely not somewhere I'd stay again for a few reasons. First, check in time is said to be between 2-9 pm. When I checked in at 3, at the bar where I had to check in, the guy working there was curious as to why I chose to... More

I heard the Ross Wooldridge trio, April 7. Very nice popular 40s pieces. Ross on Sax and clarinet, Don Thompson, piano, Lew Mele, bass. No cover; they passed the hat. A very comfortable bar and listening area, friendly folk. Inexpensive drinks and food.

A place like this could be anywhere, and I have been to several spots just like this around the world. Grab a beer and listen to some great jazz - or maybe it is just good jazz played by some guys from Hamilton who have day jobs and are just out to have fun in the evening and entertain a... More

Staying in Queen Street and West Queen West

Neighborhood Profile
Queen Street and West Queen West
Known as the Art & Design District, West Queen West is one of the most energetic and dynamic of Toronto's neighborhoods. Along with its great modernist museums, clubs, and restaurants, it's home to some of the funkiest specialty shops, ranging from clothing to stationary to collectables, and caters to niche and vintage shoppers of all kinds. That makes it a mecca for creatives, including hobbyists designers, writers, and painters. With ink on their hands and fabric pelts in their bags, visitors to Queen Street traverse the avant-garde blend of historic architecture and ultra-contemporary fare. Home to some of Toronto's chicest hotels and most modish java fixes, busy with street cars, and always suffused with live music drifting onto packed patios at bars and clubs by nightfall, the vibrancy of West Queen West is undeniable.
