The area

Neighborhood: North End
The North End is a nucleus of specialty food restaurants and shops, especially around its Mount Pleasant Village area. Frequented by antiquers for its numerous collectable shops, furniture spots, and oddity stores, the North End is a maverick of the quaint and quality. Vintage toy stores, accessory shops, and cinemas welcome perusers to step back in time, while the wide pedestrian squares and the large medical and business community inject it with a dose of modernity. With numerous cafes and Toronto's greatest number of independent booksellers, it isn't uncommon to see folks in this area at their leisure, reading outdoors and in eateries, and taking life a bit more slowly – even if it's only during their lunch break.

Not sure why anyone would bother trekking to this area. Sure, it is vibrant with anything that you would find in other parts of the city but there is really nothing special about it, other than a select few good bars.restaurants and a cool DVD/book shop. Not much in the way of history either with all the crud current condo construction going on.

Took a friend to the Keg, haven't been to a Keg in years. Looked forward to a really nice roast beef dinner. Our guest wanted the rib steak but it only came in the 20 oz. size and it was just too big for her. She and I both had the Prime Rib, I had a Caesar Salad which was passable, she had a baked potato which was good. The meat cooked medium rare was tough and grizzly. We both found the horseradish much too strong. My partner had the steak Oscar which came with three scallops and three shrimp. The sauce was fine if you ate it immediately, but it cooled very fast and became heavy and oily. The fried onions that came with all the dishes also cooled very quickly indicated that they had been reheated rather than freshly made for our plates. The service was excellent, the wait staff attentive and knowledgeable. When we entered it was extremely noisy, but that was the bar area and the dining room was much quieter. It is a very long walk to the washrooms which were spotlessly clean.

Right now, Sept 2018, the Yonge Eglinton intersection must be, by far, the worst in Toronto. Construction of the underground LRT line crosses the Yonge subway line here plus there is ongoing construction of two condos at the corner. This means both Yonge and Eglinton are reduced to one lane each in both directions and pedestrians are forced to use only one cross-walk if they want to go north-south. Ugh.
So unless you have to be there, avoid it at all costs. But if you do find yourself there with a little free time or want to sit somewhere and not be overwhelmed by it all, visit the roof top garden! This garden (which is more like a patio) is rather hard to find. There is no signage and even the elevator only says “R”. You will find the elevator right at the south east corner of the Yonge Eglinton Centre, just where you enter to go to Winners. It will be there on your left.
Once up there you will probably be all by yourself and can sit next to the little waterfall or at one of the concrete tables. Either way, it is a lovely place for a break. As an added bonus there are some plaques giving a little history of the area and well worth a read. Here are two shots I took today. I was taken to the keg at Young and Eglington for my birthday. My experience there left a few things to be desired. These things need to be improved :
The lighting – it is so damn I could barely see my companion space except for the light on his four head and down the bridge of his nose.
Table location – some tables are way too close to the servers' kitchen door. You can hear their chatter and even see in a little bit. Even some kind of barrier wall would help.
The meal – I ordered a strip loin steak. Usually a strip loin steak can be completely eaten but there was so much gristle in this it was quite unbelievable. The keg should take up making a real steak Frites instead of serving mediocre style fries.
I prefer fries but knowing the kind of fries that are served there, I ordered a baked potato instead. I don't think masers overwhelming changes that could be made. The KEG has such a great reputation and I would like to continue going there.

The Yonge Eglinton centre has all you need in a beautiful urban atmosphere. Clean, spacious, and modern. Uptown Toronto is a great place to shop.

Rented an airbnb in Midtown, a 10 minute walk from Yonge + Eg. Great area. Close to the subway. Lots of shopping and nightlife. Pubs and restaurants galore. You can feel the city without being downtown.

Still a place that is busy. It used to be known as a place to be single and live. Lots of bars, cafes restaurants. Still worth the small wander about to see the sights and get a coffee during the day with a small amount of shopping. The construction is everywhere in Toronto no matter where you go..

Yonge & Eglington is an intersection along one of the main streets in Toronto (Yonge). Busy and lively, it is definitely a street that is like the spinal cord of the city. Shops, restaurants, cafes, etc.
