Mount Mckay is a short drive out of town but well worth the time it takes. They charge a small fee is charged at the gate and then you're able to drive right up to the lookout. A possible sunset site. The view is endless

Wonderful view of the city, along with the ability to appreciate the postings and statues of the First Nations people who own the land. There is a small fee to get in but well worth it.

Day or night, the view is superb. Lake Superior, the Sleeping Giant, Lake Boats and "Salties" in the harbour, and the city of Thunder Bay stretching North to the horizon. Great pictures

Mount McKay has been a long time favourite of mine; some may balk at the $5 admission fee, but the newly paved road and improvements around the lookout (pow wow grounds etc.) make it evident that the money is going right back into improving it....More

We spent maybe 45 mins there. The drive up has no views but for $5 it is worth the drive for the view.

Thunder bay for the Day (3 Replies)
Will be in TB for a day end of July. Our 1st time to TB. Plan on going to Kakabeka Falls, maybe a stop at Fort William and Mount McKay. We'll have 2 teen boys with us. Looking for suggestions on other places in TB we shouldn't miss? Can you drive to the top of Mount McKay? or is it HIke only? We'll spend the day in TB - then stop at Grand Portage on our way back to Tofte area. Thanks much!

You can drive as far as the lookout area, which is at the 500ft mark. From there you would have to hike to the top. Check for companies doing harbour cruises.... on a good weather day they are lots of fun.

Northern Ontario-anything touristy north of Timmins/Cochrane (3 Replies)
Hi. I am planning a family trip to Northern Ontario (driving from near Toronto) for next July. I am having a hard time finding information on what to do north of Timmins/Cochrane and I am beginning to think maybe the tourist industry too far north is non-existent? I am wondering if we would be better off spending our 2 weeks sticking around the coastline of Lake Superior and going as far west as Thunder Bay? I have a few Provincial Parks picked out to visit (Kakabeka Falls, Sleeping Giant,...More
