A hidden gem. Great view of city, good hiking trails and new road and powwow grounds. You can feel the sacredness of the mountain. The drive up in the fall is spectacular.

We had some difficulty finding the road to go up the mountain but used Google. Beautiful view of Thunder Bay and the Sleeping Giant.

My family was up visiting from 12+ hours away this weekend and we planned our weekend around going to Mount McKay only to get up there and find the gate and admission office closed. There was zero communication on the Facebook page or Website that...More

We went with grandsons, the view of the Thunder Bay area is excellent, although there is no gift store or any store for that matter. It was $5 for the car to go up, so reasonable. It was a clear and beautiful day as well.

This was a great hike! Took awhile but we got to the top. The hike gets quite steep and the rocks are shaky so make sure you wear good hiking shoes and bring water.

So I don't know where to start to get to the top. Drive up paid the five dollars. And found the starting spot. Took about 30 mins to get up. Not very easy but we made it. Hard coming down too very steep. Once we...More

It is about a 40 minute vehicle ride to the admission gate from the city itself. There is an admission charge of $5 per vehicle. From here there is another 3 minute or so drive to a gravel parking lot. From this altitude you can...More

I attended a concert on Mt McKay and it was pure magic! The sun began to set over the mountain and the suns evening glow passing over the city was hauntingly beautiful. As the city lights sparkled, you could see Salties (international cargo ships) lit...More

My kids have been begging for the longest time to climb this mountain, finally a free Sunday came up! My kids are 7 and 9, they made it to the top no problem at all. I’m not sure I’d take kids much younger than that...More

$5 a car load, good road in the summer. Very nice view of the city from the top. Watch out with young children, close to the edge with a stretchy barrier on one side. Worth it to go to see the view, if you don’t...More

We spent maybe 45 mins there. The drive up has no views but for $5 it is worth the drive for the view.

Thunder bay for the Day (3 Replies)
Will be in TB for a day end of July. Our 1st time to TB. Plan on going to Kakabeka Falls, maybe a stop at Fort William and Mount McKay. We'll have 2 teen boys with us. Looking for suggestions on other places in TB we shouldn't miss? Can you drive to the top of Mount McKay? or is it HIke only? We'll spend the day in TB - then stop at Grand Portage on our way back to Tofte area. Thanks much!

You can drive as far as the lookout area, which is at the 500ft mark. From there you would have to hike to the top. Check for companies doing harbour cruises.... on a good weather day they are lots of fun.

Northern Ontario-anything touristy north of Timmins/Cochrane (3 Replies)
Hi. I am planning a family trip to Northern Ontario (driving from near Toronto) for next July. I am having a hard time finding information on what to do north of Timmins/Cochrane and I am beginning to think maybe the tourist industry too far north is non-existent? I am wondering if we would be better off spending our 2 weeks sticking around the coastline of Lake Superior and going as far west as Thunder Bay? I have a few Provincial Parks picked out to visit (Kakabeka Falls, Sleeping Giant,...More
