We visited during Christmas season this January to see the illuminated Stratford. It was fun to enjoy the different illuminations and the square around the City Hall. The City Hall building is pretty and becomes more pretty once it is illuminated.

Situated in the main downtown core of Stratford downtown it is charming historic building with a very beautiful but unique architecture.
We were unable to take a tour of the city hall, but right opposite to it on Downie street there is a well maintained tourism center, the girl there was very helpful and adviced a self exploratory landmark tour of downtown. The map provided was very easy to follow and well marked. The tour was about a hour long and we were able to see all the important landmarks. Most attractive were the stone bridge on Avon river and the court house building. When taking a tour do not forget to look up at the buildings as the top of the buildings have still the same old architecture.
In all we spent a great day in this beautiful historic town in Ontario.
Just a tip that most of the parking in the downtown are paid but just a 10 minutes walk from the city hall there are two free municipal lots on St. Patrick street.

A beautifully maintained building which can be booked for a wedding. The civil ceremony is conducted with respect in the elaborate well-maintained council chambers.

It is a lovely city centre area to stroll about , have a drink at an outdoor table and shop if that's your thing.

Visiting Canadian friends in the Hamilton area for a week with some of my friends from home, we spent an afternoon and evening in the City of Stratford.
Soon after parking all the vehicles on Wellington Street, we began a walking tour of the historic district. Our first stop was at the corner at Stratford City Hall, a National Historic Site of Canada. It is located in the triangular Stratford Market Square. The famous Avon Theatre was under two blocks away.
The present building was built in 1900 in a number of architectural styles. It is composed of red brick with sandstone trim. The main parts of the building are in the Jacobean-Queen Anne Revival style. The gables are in the Flemish Renaissance style. The center of the building is a hexagonal shape. The clock tower is a circular. The cupola is in a conventional, classic style.
There is a seal on either side of the entrance. One is of a beehive to represent business enterprise; the other is of a train to symbolize industry.
We thought that all the styles blended well and made a very attractive building that resembled an ornate castle.
We rate Stratford City Hall at 5.0 and recommend stopping by to admire it as an example of turn-of-the century architecture.

Make sure to walk up the steps and check out the interior of this historic 1897 building. The lobby has some historical photos and literature but its best just to take a moment to take it all in.

The city hall is in the centre of town. It stands out in it's surroundings and I must say, you are in awe when you see it.

As a long term city resident,i have spent literally years in and around our city hall. It is a beautiful, solid old building. It exudes character both inside and out. As the focal point of the downtown core, it is must see for any Stratford visitor.

I went January 2012. The snow was present and was cold but the presence of this beautiful building sitting majestically on the street corner dominates the street and is a great distraction to the weather. Would recommend a visit.
