Sail your boat through the lock at the Sault Ste. Marie Canal, or do your exploring of this fascinating site on foot. Learn how this Canal - once boasting the longest lock in the world and the first one powered by electricity - allowed ships, and now pleasure craft, to bypass the rapids caused by a change in elevation in the St. Marys River. Free entry to our Visitor Centre, gift shop, washrooms, parking, walking and biking trails. Fat Bikes available for hourly rental. Full guided site tours available for a small fee. The Lock, Visitor Centre and washrooms are closed from Mid October to Mid May, but the site still open to the public to enjoy the exterior exhibits, grounds and trails.

Never busy-always taking pictures here. Different walk loops to take. Cross the lock winter or summer and go to inland waterway pedestrian/bike bridge and onto Whitefish Island to get to St Mary's Rapids boardwalk. View ships locking most of the year. Almost always see fly fishermen vying for salmon or trout at the last lookout (there are 3) west. Loop... More

Although the locks are closed for the season, I enjoyed visiting this site and walking on the numerous trails located on the three islands.

The first of the locks between Lake Superior and the St. Mary's River 6m (20ft.) below was put into operation in 1895. It enabled boats and commercial ships of the day to venture further West than the Soo by avoiding the treacherous rapids that the Voyageurs used to have to portage around by carrying their huge canoes and supplies (the... Great place to meander and enjoy one of the city's and countries oldest historical sights. Then enjoyed a relaxing hike on Whitefish Island along well maintained wilderness trails with beautiful scenic views of the St Mary's River Rapids.

I went for a walk all through the area with my dog. She loved it too. There is plenty to look at and many things to read. Lots of wildlife. It's a beautiful area.

We loved the walking trails on Whitefish Island, and enjoyed discussing the history of the Soo rapids, as well as seeing the old historic lock here

I've visited this historic site many times as a child. Visiting this site brought back a lot of memories about events and activities that I've attended at this site to learn the history of the Canal. Surprisingly I remembered a lot of information that I learned as a child, which proves that they do a good job at teaching children... More

The waterfront of SSM Ontario is one of the hightlights of this place. A walk along the waterfront and canal and then across to Whitefish Island is a very pleasant way to look back over the waterfront, at the USA/Canada bridge, and the city.

Quite interesting to watch the boats go through (recreational). When you cross the locks and go on the trail it is absolutely breathtaking . Lots of birds, beaver houses and dams. There are a couple of directions you can go so if you wanted you could picnic and take the afternoon. it is also a really good wade in fishing... More

Great site to visit. Great heritage location with great walking paths. Watch boats go through the locks between Lakes Huron and Superior, walk across to the island for nature paths or have a look at the history of the area. Great for families.
