Confederation Square was a long time in the making. It replaces a triangular plaza named after Governor General Connaught. It was planned in 1927 to house a war memorial to commemorate the fallen of World War I which was not completed for 12 years being unveiled by King George VI in May 1939 a mere three months before the outbreak of World War II. At the base of the war memorial is the tomb of the unknown soldier. Although an arts centre was part of the original project one was not opened until the inauguration of the National Arts Centre in 1969.

In the city centre is this small park, that is ok to wander around, its more stone than grass but its a good place to rest for a few minutes and worth your time.

We were staying across the street at the Lord Elgin Hotel. Walked in the park a few times. Loved seeing the kids playing games. The squirrels/chipmunks & pigeons are everywhere. People just out enjoying themselves. Loved seeing the memorial to animals that were also heroes during the war.

Nice space to sit and watch the world go by. Birds and mammals to watch. Some climb the trees others ride their bikes to work. The trees offer shade and a bit of cool in which the tourist can read a book, drink some water, and re-gird their loins for another sojourn to inspect the many attractions that are within walking distance of this central hub. There are two fine memorials within the park, go see them!!!

We expected a bit more out of something called Confederation Square. It is a large park with some statues and memorials in it. That being said, although maybe not the most exciting place, it was a lovely park, and made a great place to rest for a few minutes before we headed into downtown Ottawa. It is right across the street from the Lord Elgin hotel which has a lovely lobby worth visiting as well.
