Victoria Island is in the middle of the Outaouais River between Ottawa and Gatineau, traversed by two sets of bridges, containing old mill buildings, an aboriginal museum and the Chaudiere Falls. Until recently a free car park and a spot affording views of both cities. In October 2018 the NCC announced its closure for seven years on the pretext of needing to decontaminate soil.

I decided to explore the park on my way back to Ottawa from Chaudière Falls. There's not much here other than the Aboriginal Experiences exhibit that educates visitors about the Algonquin First Nation. Their website looks like it would be an interesting experience (open from May to October).

However, if you walk out to the east end of the island you will be rewarded with a wonderful view of the Ottawa river, Parliament, and the Supreme Court; and at sunset the view is amazing!

If your hotel is close by, then it is worth to visit this island. In this island, it is good to take some photo that shows different view of Parliament Hill.
Keep away from the river, water is high and strong after raining.

It has nice paths to walk or to hike, and from it you get great views of the Parliament Hill, of Ottawa river and its rapids, of Hull. A good place to spend some hours or to take some photo shoots

Great place to jog, cycle, and do leisurely strolls. Easily accessible from downtown Ottawa and Gatineau and great views of these cities from the park and Portage Bridge.

This Island is located in the middle of the Ottawa River and above are a set of rapids. In the spring the river runs high and the falls create a roar and mist.

My first chances to see Parliament Hill from across the river took place a number of years ago when I was given a tour by automobile. I recently walked along the bottom of Parliament Hill and found Victoria Island by luck as I was looking for a back door to get to the Supreme Court building. I recall that first experience of seeing the Hill from across the river years ago when I first came to the national capital. Compare this view of the Hill from the Victoria Island vantage point with the view available readily from the National Canadian Art Gallery. Tell me the difference. Since then I have walked along the river shore and I did cross the bridge. A small island still in place after the fire from years ago.It is still worth your time as photographer. Stunning view of the parliament buildings remains unchanged. Better yet for me it was a chance to see how the river flowed. See this place if you become enamored with the Rideau locks and Rideau Canal. Walk from Quebec and approach the island from this vantage point. I did try to walk from the Alexander Bridge to the two bridges that span the river now. It takes some time and energy and endurance. Then walk to Parliament Hill from that point of view. If you want a place for picnic and rest this might be it. It was for me. I enjoyed watching the flow of the Ottawa River. I did not see many people taking pictures or drawing sketches of the landscape. I would want to stay here for that reason if I were a student of art. A small number of people were having a picnic. Do art class congregate here for these purposes? For me it has been difficult know where all the free flowing water is coming from and going in and around Ottawa even if I look at a map for two hours. I had to crossover to Quebec by foot to get a better understanding of the flow of fresh water along the river. Rivers have interested me for years. So here was an up close chance to see one of them in operation. You probably have to be an outdoors person to fully enjoy staying on this island for a long time. Some parts of the Canadian wilderness could be seen there. If my choice were to have lunch at one of those busy places that cater to TGIF people along George Street or to have peaceful picnic on Victoria Island guess what my choice would be. My impression was that this island does not attract many TGIF crowds. I might not have been at Victoria Island for all the major events that reportedly take place there but I was satisfied for having visited this small island. I do not know if limnology is a field for study along this river but I did think about learning more about Canadian rivers. You should do the same.

I came to Victoria Island at night to figure out it has excellent view on Parliament Hill and Rideau Locks. It also has some historical buildings that were not burned during the great fire. Nice place to stop

This part of Ottawa was the only spot not burnt in the great fire of 1900 century. Great place to visit or picture or for a little rest.

This tiny island is beautiful, with a stunning view of the river and parliament buildings. I especially recommend going during a pow-wow, the native reenactment on this island are great.
