When it comes to tourism in major world capitals, Ottawa is sometimes either ignored (only 750,000 people live here) or gently mocked for being, well, small. This narrow attitude overlooks the extraordinary greenness of one of the great health-focused and biking cities of the world. Ottawa has around 250 miles of bike paths, most of which are scenic and give you great views of the canal, the river and sights such as the Parliament Buildings. The cycle paths are for bikes and pedestrians and even at peak periods, there are rarely clashes of traffic hold-ups. The city just upgraded the main paths, eliminating the potholes of old and ensuring a smooth ride. From downtown you can either cycle up and down the scenic canal and if you are more energetic, try the path along the Ottawa Rivers, past small waterfalls, gentle rapids and lots of greenery, not to mention Canada geese and the occasional groundhog. The signposting is excellent and you can't get lost. The only drawback is the relative lack of water fountains, so if you want a spin in the summer months, fill up a couple of bottles.

This beautiful route in and out of downtown is headed for Major Construction over the next few months as the LRT Phase 2 pushes the parkway up against the river. Don't say I didn't warn you. There is a schedule, but Phase 1 was a year and a half behind schedule!

This is a leftover of failed design. Look at this place, an absolutely unusable piece of real estate. The water here smells funny.

The bike paths along the Sir John A parkway run along the Ottawa River and this is one of the most scienic and safest bike paths. Just watch out for people and dogs who stray in front of the bikes approaching them from the back!!

Lovely along the Ottawa river. Scenery is beautiful. Lots of places to stop along the river. And not far from anywhere in the city.

The parkway is a great way to see the city on the average day, but it is best enjoyed on Parkway Sundays... a tradition that I hope lives on for a long time. The Parkway is closed to cars etc. on Sunday mornings after the May long weekend through to the September long weekend. This allows young families, rollerbladers, etc. to have the run of the road. It's a great way to get Ottawa moving and enjoying the city.

Well paved paths along the Ottawa River, lots of parking, playgrounds, beaches, and direct access to downtown, sites and Byward Market area. Lots of free parking along the pathway - park and ride!
