We had a great first camping experience in our new RV for the weekend. We wanted to give it a good test run somewhere local before some of our bigger trips this summer. Our site in the Pines was wonderful. Decent amount of space, clean and easy to access. We loved all the mature trees too which helped make lots of shade on the sites. Security did frequent laps and other guests were very quiet. There is so much to see and explore. We did some Geocaching and hiking but were a bit disappointed in the amount of garbage along the trails that we hiked. Would 100% come back again and would recommend to others.

I decided to purchase a season's pass this year for Fanshawe as well as the two other sites that are part of the Upper Thames Conservation Area and was so pleased with the experience I have already purchased a pass for next year. Although I have not used the campground area in years, and have not visited the Pioneer Village nor Safety Village for ages, I was still able to get my money's worth with the great boating and hiking available. There are a couple of hiking trails in the park, one of which that takes you on a 22K trek around the lake which is beautiful as well as a much shorter one that is also quite enjoyable. When hiking on the larger route, be mindful that the trail is also used by bikers who will all be travelling either clockwise or counter-clockwise depending on which day it is. The trails are fairly well marked and even if you just do an in and out trip, the scenery is still beautiful. I would rate the terrain as moderate because the paths are not paved and you have to be mindful of rocks and tree roots as you hike. Just across the dam, there is a boat launch area that has plenty of parking. The lake is large enough that you do not feel crowded if there are other boats on the water, but small enough that you can easily travel the east-west length in an hour or so. I have not done the longer stretch, but plan to next year. If you do not have your own boat, rentals are available on a first come, first served basis and come with paddles, a boat kit and life jackets. A bonus for aviation lovers is that the lake is near the airport, so you can see planes flying overhead occasionally. If you are just looking for a leisurely day, there are plenty of scenic picnic areas withing the park with lots of parking available. There are a couple of play areas as well as some washrooms.

I stayed a week in an RV on the no noise side. I was here for work and pleasure. We stayed thru the long weekend. The good The park is beautiful with lots of trails and scenery. People respected the noise bylaws The bad. This park is right in front of a runway of an international airport. Every morning around 4 am we were jolted out of bed. Many of the planes are jumbo jets. Before the long weekend the washrooms were very clean but after people arrived it was clear the cleaning staff was understaffed. The lake itself contains Blue Green algae. This is toxic to humans and potentially deadly to dogs. Our dog swam at one of the beaches with the algae. We didn't know the water was toxic as there was no signage. We proceded to another area and saw a sign from the ministry that the water contained the toxic blooms. The pup is ok but there should have been more signage. Overall park is nice but airport is way too noisy.

Car battery died in the evening. When I approached the patrol truck to ask for a jump, they told me they couldn’t help. Two little kids and I were left stranded at the campsite and they couldn’t care less. Lake stunk, algae bloom all over the place. Never stay there

I never expected Fanshawe campground to be quiet, but it is terribly noisy. It's not the fault of the park, it's just the proximity to the airport. The park facilities were clean, campsites were nice. However, there was NO swimming anywhere. The pool was closed for some unknown reason (It's the end of JUNE) and there was no swimming beaches anywhere. Also, our plans had hinged on taking our kids out canoeing, but there are a grand total of 4 CANOES in the ENTIRE PARK for rent and you could not reserve them. When I said that was ridiculous the employee said yes many people complain. Get some more canoes, Fanshawe, seriously. And fix your pool if you won't let people swim elsewhere.
